Find your position in Google SERPs when set to 100

Thanks to RonPK over at WebMasterWorld for this very nice little script. If you have your search results set to 100 (for example) in Google, it can be difficult to figure out exactly where a site ranks when it is down towards the bottom of the page. This simple little script numbers each of the results returned. You can load the script here at goocounter.html and then drag the link to your Personal Toolbar (as described below), or do it yourself using the instructions RonPK gave in the WMW thread.

Drag the link to your Personal Toolbar (Mozilla), Personal Bar (Opera) or…

Quality free content with pics and formatting options

One of the best free content sites I have found is www.contentinfusion.com. Not only does it offer quality articles, but the options for formatting those articles are much broader than most content services. You can even have it display thumbnail images next to each article, which is something I have not seen in another service like this. The categories are a bit limited still, but if your site falls within one of its categories, you could have a good new resource for offering dynamic content on your site.

How many of your backlinks are from unique domains?

Found a simple little tool that does SEO analysis on a page. It is nothing fancy or earth-shattering, but it does give one little stat that I found interesting. It not only shows the number of backlinks to the page, but it also shows how many unique domains that those backlinks came from (limited as shown below). Here is an example of what I am talking about.

Example page from a domain (not this one) that I ran:

This page has 658 backlinks reported by Yahoo. Backlinks are links to your page from other pages.

Unique linking domains: 73 This is the number…

An even sneakier peek at the new MSN sneak peek

Gary Price stumbled upon what may be a sneak peak at not only the upcoming look of the new MSN search engine, but also some features that are bound to affect the SERPs. Although the page he refers to no longer exists, he did take screenshots for you to see, and gives a nice description of what he found. He describes an advanced Search Builder that is pretty interesting, and even more interesting, three sliders to manipulate the search results. Check it all out at http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/041026-591a.

Analyze your competitors age

When analyzing why your competitors rank well in the SERPs, it may be helpful to include the age of the site in the analysis. While I would like to see this component included in some of the more comprehensive analysis tools on the web, I have not yet seen one that does. Still, there is a tool that you can use as a stand-alone tool at www.123promotion.co.uk/tools/age-of-website.php. After you have gathered the analysis info from other tools, run this tool on the top 10 or 20 competitors and see if the age factor plays any part in the overall analysis.

Want live log file analysis with all the details?

Most hosting companies supply you with the basic log file analysis programs. These are better than nothing, but there is so much more information you could obtain with a better program. The log analyzer I have used over the years is Sawmill, which you can find at www.sawmill.net. The amount of detail you get using this program is staggering. You can drill down to almost any level of detail. The features are too numerous to mention, so read up about them on the site. Oh, and one other important thing to mention is that you can actually get the program…

From the mouths of the search engines

SEOs sometimes have knowledge and they do not know where the source of that knowledge came from. Sometimes facts have been known for so long that they are just a part of the fact pool, but we no longer remember where we got the facts and have no way to back them up anymore. So it is always nice when we get a fact re-validated from the search engines themselves. A recent quote from Marissa Mayer (product manager at Google) does just that regarding the number of factors that Google uses in its algorithm. SEOs have known for a long…

Free reciprocal links checking tool

As promised in a previous link related post, there are tools that will automatically check your reciprocal links on partner pages for you. Once you have a fairly large number of reciprocal link partners, manually checking to see if they are still linking to you can be nearly impossible. At that point, its time to use a tool to manage the checking automatically. ClickSentry is a free reciprocal link manager. Its features include:

  • Manage multiple websites (your own)
  • Monitor unlimited link partners
  • Email notification of bad link partners
  • Reports what position your link is of all links on page

MSN search and desktop search coming soon

Now that Google has released its Desktop search beta, it looks like MSN will step up to the plate to enter the contest within the next two months. According to this article at http://news.zdnet.com/2100-3513_22-5423080.html, Microsoft has confirmed that we will see “some good MSN search technology in this calendar year, probably late the second half”. While the desktop search war will be interesting (Yahoo has also just bought a company to help them provide this ability), it is still the search engines themselves that matter most to SEOs. And the new MSN search engine looks like a promising competitor. Very…

Getting free content gets even easier

Goarticles.com has long been a good place to get free content, but they have made it even easier now, by providing RSS feeds of their newest and most popular articles in each category. They even make the feeds available in two formats - the regular RSS feed and as a simple javascript. If you need more, relevant content on your site, and have not been to goarticles.com in a while, check out the changes they have made.

Getting backlink info the manual way

You can always check backlinks across different search engines via tools like that offered by marketleap.com and hundreds of others that are available. But some people like to do things manually, so here is a quick review of how to check backlinks from some of the search engines. (Note that search engines may not report all of your backlinks, especially Google).

Google - link:www.yourdomain.com
New MSN Search Beta - link:www.yourdomain.com
Yahoo! - link:http://www.yourdomain.com

Note 1: With the Yahoo! link: command, you must also include the http;// part of your domain. Also, with any of these, you may get different results for www vs non-www…
