Steven Bradley: Search Blogger of the Day

This is one of a series of posts in which I will be highlighting each member of the Search Bloggers list, with commentary on one of their posts (new or old). Look for this series to continue once or twice a week for the next couple of months.

Meet Steven Bradley, the Search Blogger of the Day. You might know him best as the guy who creates killer ‘This Month In SEO’ roundup link lists. And of course, he doesn’t just dump a bunch of links on a page; he gives a nice summary explaining why the links are listed. But I’m…

Taylor Pratt: Search Blogger of The Day

Meet Taylor Pratt. He’s currently last on the Search Bloggers list because that’s how it worked out alphabetically. So I decided I would be different and promote the bloggers in the list in reverse order. Since this is the first Search Blogger of The Day post, I’ll give you a quick rundown of what it’s all about. I plan to highlight a post that I particularly enjoyed from each of the bloggers on the list, and share that with you. I’ll probably do this once or twice a week for the next couple of months, or until I’ve highlighted each of them. Who knows, maybe I’ll start over again when I’m done. We’ll see. But for now, let’s take a closer look at Taylor Pratt.

Google SERPs: Can you dig it?

Just a few hours ago TechCrunch reported that one of their readers was seeing a new interface on the Google SERP. The interface is a Digg style interface allowing users to vote for/against the search results. Can you really see Google doing something like this long term? Whilst this was the first I’d heard of it, it isn’t anything completely new. Google have been testing something similar since late 2007. This feature hasn’t ever been available in the experimental area on Google but it seems like it has been available to a small percentage of users. This latest test features differences to what has been seen previously, namely that users can change their vote.

This is just a reminder that SEO Scoop is on a mission to help you promote your own search-related blog. There are actually two ways of doing that here.

Second, you can guest post here on SEO Scoop, and get some decent exposure…

Would You Pay $5 For 4 Months Of Advertising Here?

Ok, it’s time for a bit of self-promotion here. Quick question: Would you pay $5 for 4 months of advertising here on SEO Scoop - above the fold? I’d bet your answer is probably yes, right? And yet, very few people take advantage of the Scratchback TopSpots advertising that you see just over there –> to your right. Why is that, I wonder? Well, I’d guess it’s because of one or more of the following reasons:

  1. They don’t know that it only costs $5
  2. They don’t want a no-followed link even at such a low price
  3. They assume their ad will be bumped…

Kudos For Latest Microsoft Acquisition - Powerset

I don’t often blog about acquisitions, but I have to throw my kudos at Microsoft today for acquiring Powerset. I started paying attention to Powerset back in November, 2006, and beta tested it for a little while a year later.

I haven’t played with Powerset’s natural language search engine since then, and I’m sure it’s gotten better by now, but in any case, it’s the one search engine that I’ve felt all along had the potential to be a Google killer. I think Microsoft’s acquisition of Powerset is a much better deal than if they’d purchased Yahoo. And by “better deal”, I…

The Ultimate Hacker Prevention Guide

You know I’ve been on a mission to help rid ourselves of all the problems we see with sites being defaced, hack’d, crack’d, and pillaged. Frankly, if you have a WordPress blog that hasn’t been upgraded to the latest version (currently 2.5.1), it’s not a matter of IF but a matter of WHEN you can expect to see it attacked.

Buy or Sell Nofollow’d Contextual Link Ads

A year or so ago, I checked out LinkXL and considered selling contextual link ads through them, but for some reason I never did. I don’t remember why I didn’t. I probably just got busy with something else and forgot about them. I do that alot unfortunately.

Nevertheless, I was alerted to them again recently, and when I found out that they offer the ability to sell contextual links with nofollows on them, my interest was peaked. Say what you will about nofollows, but I learned my lesson last fall when Google slapped me upside the head, and I promised Google then…

My Salute to the Women of SEO / Search

It got me thinking, on many differing levels, on how our industry could /
should be held-up as a level modern day playing field where men and woman
get paid on their worth and not because of their gender. Plus, I also have a
personal interest in talking about woman in search, but more of that later.
