SEO Ian Turner missing since PubCon

Ian Turner, a well-known UK SEO, who also moderates the UK forum for WMW, has gone missing. He was apparently last seen Saturday morning at the WMW conference I attended. I saw Ian during the conference, but unfortunately, did not get a chance to speak with him. Threadwatch has what I suppose is the official thread on this at www.threadwatch.org/node/3008. If anyone can help at all in finding Ian, please let his wife know asap via the Threadwatch thread. Here is a recent picture of Ian.

My thoughts go out to his wife, family, and friends. I sincerely hope he is…

A new publisher revenue choice

While at the WMW conference, I came across a vendor promoting a different kind of choice for getting revenue on a site, that is similar to adsense, but actually pretty different. It is by Chitika, which also offers the standard adsense-type contextual advertising model, but they now have a new product that is interesting. They call it eMiniMalls. It is like a banner ad, but instead of displaying an ad for a company, it instead displays contextually targetted products in a comparative shopping format. In other words, if your page is about music, it might display several listings for Ipods…

Keyword Selection - The Goldilocks method

One of the speakers at the WMW conference (sorry I forgot to note which one) briefly discussed keyword research and selection, using what he called the Goldilocks method. Simply put, it is this:

  1. You don’t want keywords that are too hot! They are difficult to rank for, and are too expensive to purchase via PPC.
  2. You don’t want keywords that are too cold! No one searches for them, or they are too general or not relevant.
  3. Obviously, you want keywords that are just right! These keywords will have the right mix of both relevancy and demand.
  4. This analogy could be a great way of…

Google Video Viewer

I am on jury duty this week, so posting may be sporadic. I guess the big news today is the Google Video Viewer that allows you to play any video available on Google Video, which is here. This story does not interest me much, since as far as I am concerned, it has little to do with standard SEO, but since I am in a rush to get back to the courthouse, I don’t have time to deal with things that interest me more. I will try to get some more standard SEO topics posted during the week, as I have…

Signals of Quality

Lately, I’ve been hearing Google representatives using a new term - or at least new to me. Signals of Quality has been mentioned several times lately. One stage of the latest Bourbon update, for example, was described as “bringing in new signals of quality”. I also heard the phrase a couple of times at the WMW conference.

So, what does this phrase, signals of quality, mean to us as SEOs? My guess is that Google is now starting to concentrate on a different kind of filter, if that term could be applied here. Rather than a filter that penalizes for some wrong-doing,…

How to submit a reinclusion request to Google

Until I get my notes sorted from the WMW conference, I thought I would share some info on how to do a reinclusion requestion to Google. This is only for sites that are not indexed at all. In other words, if you do a site:www.yourdomain.com command, and no information is returned, then you are not indexed. Assuming your site is clean (follows Google guidelines), you can politely ask Google to consider reincluding your site in the index. If, for instance, you had been banned for using shady techniques, you could clean up the site, and ask to be reincluded. Or…

Quick SEO tips and info from the conference

These are some of the things that were mentioned by various speakers at the conference.

If you have affiliate links that allow you to append your own tracking ids to the url, this would be a good place to use a keyword. For instance, your affiliate link would look something like www.affsite.com?affid=12345&trackid=keyword

If the bots are using a lot of bandwidth, check to see if your server supports gzipping your pages. It can cut the bandwidth by 75%.

You can now report spammy Adsense sites to Google. While on the spammy site, click on the Ads By Goooooogle link, and type just one…

Google engineer explains…

At the WMW conference this evening, Google held a Meet the Google Engineers roundtable cocktail party. More

about the event itself in a later post, but I wanted to let everyone know what a Google engineer said about one of

the aspects of the Google algorithm.

The question asked of the Google engineer was in regards to whether or not Google penalizes or filters a site that

has a sudden influx of new pages. This was the explanation given (paraphrased)…

Google does not specifically filter for any one particular thing like that. Instead the algorithm looks at other

similar situations and determines if…

WMW Conference notes - Day One

Both Search Engine Roundtable and SEO Book are doing a good job of documenting the WMW conference sessions in

detail. After looking at my notes, and comparing them to the posts from phref="http://www.seroundtable.com/">Barry and Aaron, they are essentially

the same. So, instead of regurgitating the same info, I’ll let you read their notes for the details, and I will,

instead, write more about what I think were some of the most important or most impressionable things that I get out

of the sessions. What follows will not necessarily be exact quotes from the speakers, but rather my take on either

what…

WMW Conference tips

Just a quick note about what I’ve noticed so far here at the WebmasterWorld conference. I will have more to say about it when I have more time. But for now, I just wanted to mention that while the sessions seem to be somewhat basic and general, each one seems to provide at least one nugget of information, or one thing that sparks an idea. For newbies, of course, there’s a wealth of info to be had, but for seasoned SEOs, it seems to be more of an idea sparker than anything else. However, the ability to talk to people…

Yahoo update planned for tonight

According to Yahoo!, they will be making changes to their index tonight, so expect ranking changes to happen. I have to give credit to Yahoo! for letting us know about pending changes. Thanks Yahoo! It’s a refreshing change of pace. Yahoo! discusses it at www.ysearchblog.com/archives/000120.html.

Getting ready for the conference

Posting will be light or even non-existant over the next couple of days, as I get ready for the WMW PubCon conference in New Orleans. I will not be posting live during the conference, but I promise to post about the sessions I attend each night. Well, assuming there are no glitches with internet access at the hotel, that is. Now I have to go pack my bags.

Black Hat vs. White Hat SEO - The Great Debate

A couple of weeks ago I shared a little Black Hat vs. White Hat movie that I made. The movie is here and the post was here. Of course, that was just a goofy cartoon, but now there’s a Black Hat vs. White Hat interview at syndk8.com between EarlGrey and Randfish. It is an interesting read, as each side debates the issues surrounding the different paths an SEO may take. Both sides presented their arguments while maintaining respect for the other’s opinions. Enjoy.
