What really matters in SEO?
Someone who has been in this business for a long time, and has been both famous and infamous, once said, Placements are nothing. Sales are everything. Top placements are only a means to an end. If that end doesn’t result in something happening you wanted to happen, then a Number 1 spot is a failure. Planning, objectives and strategies and hitting your numbers is what its all about. If you can hit your numbers without top placements then do it and save yourself the grief.
That statement is so very true. I’ve made the mistake of having number one rankings only to realize that those rankings resulted in almost no sales. I had worked for months on end to achieve that number one spot, and all that time had earned me diddly-squat. It was at that point that I realized that I had to learn the marketing side of the business as well. I still don’t claim to be a top marketer. It really is not my forte. However, I do pay a lot more attention to this side of the business than I did before, and hopefully, that will prevent me from ever making that same mistake again.
If you spend all your time at SEO forums, and working on optimization, take a break from it for a week and visit sites that will help you learn more about the marketing aspects. What changes can you make to your site that will turn your visitors into buyers? What do you need to change to make more of those visitors click where you want them to click? Does your design and content work hand in hand to lead the visitor where you want them to go? Does your site really answer the questions that buyers have, in such a way that they have every reason to buy from you? Or does it encourage the user to click their back button and return to the SERPs to find a site that does?
By all means, aim to get top rankings. But make sure that those rankings lead to a site that will turn visitors into buyers!

If you are the first to "discover" any of my posts in StumbleUpon, one of the following categories would probably be the most appropriate to place it into. You don't have to choose one of these, of course, but based on what I usually write about, there's a good chance any of my posts will fall into one of these categories.
