Default search engine quest ends
December 31, 2006 by DazzlinDonna · 7 Comments
Back on 12/11, I mentioned that I was on a quest to find a new default search engine. For one week each, I was going to try Yahoo, MSN, and Ask. This past week was Ask’s turn. All in all, it fared pretty well, with only a few disappointments. It didn’t however, do well enough to supplant Yahoo in my tests, so Yahoo is the big winner for me. From now on, I will be using Yahoo as my default search engine, and I will alternate between using Ask, MSN, and Google whenever Yahoo fails to provide what I am looking for.

Z-List Meme
December 28, 2006 by DazzlinDonna · 7 Comments
Eric Enge told me about the latest meme that is spreading which is geared towards highlighting blogs that deserve more attention than they may be getting. Started by Mack Collier, it gives link love to blogs that deserve it. To continue the process, simply CUT AND PASTE the list I have below, and then ADD any blogs you feel aren’t getting their due (but obey the honor system of not adding your own blog). So below is the current list that I’ve seen, with a couple of my own additions at the end.
SEO Scoop’s 2006 Stats
December 27, 2006 by DazzlinDonna · 5 Comments
Since SEOmoz is sort of requesting bloggers’ stats, and Graywolf has followed suit, I thought I’d share some stats as well. Unfortunately, I changed hosts earlier this year, so I only have some stats since April. In addition, the stats available to me are minimal, and for SEO Scoop, I didn’t really see a need to try to work with a better stats program. So really, all I have to offer are the monthly visits since April, which are:
SEO strategies for 2007
December 26, 2006 by DazzlinDonna · 1 Comment
Looking back on 2006, I can see that I’ve had some successes and some failures in my SEO strategies. Most of the failures centered around lack of interest and/or time, while some involved technical “oopsies” on my part. Most of the successes had much to do with concentration and investment of time to a project.
Next on the using a new search engine series
December 25, 2006 by DazzlinDonna · 1 Comment
Following up on my test of using other search engines series (started here and continuing here), last week was MSN’s turn (or, Live). MSN didn’t fare as well for me as Yahoo! did. I didn’t have a horrible experience when searching for stuff using MSN, but it wasn’t great either. I found what I was looking for about 75% of the time, and the rest of the time I had to turn elsewhere. I wanted MSN to do better, but it just doesn’t make it to the top of the list. Yahoo still reigns supreme for now. This week…it’s Ask’s turn. I’ll let you know how it goes next week.
Google index updates
December 23, 2006 by DazzlinDonna · 2 Comments
I’ve been making some noise (often sarcastically) about Google not acknowledging the SERPs changes that webmasters have been seeing over the last few weeks. See comments here, here and here. Basically, Matt Cutts has been saying repeatedly that the changes lots of people are seeing in the SERPs is just “normal operations”. I guess he got tired of hearing from people like me, so he posted today on his blog and clarified that the changes we’ve been noticing over the last few weeks involves a data refresh – an index update – that is occurring on a daily basis. This is the same data refresh that had impacts on June 27th, July 27th, and August 17th.
Merry Christmas!

Christmas is arriving shortly, and I’m being tugged in various directions to prepare for it. SEO has to go on the backburner for a few days, so if you don’t hear from me, that’s why. I hope all of you have a very Merry Christmas, and for those of you who don’t celebrate Christmas, have a wonderful weekend. This holiday season, remember to take a break from work, sing a few carols, sip some eggnog, and enjoy your family and friends. Be safe, be happy, and be well. Merry Christmas!

Update on using a new search engine
December 18, 2006 by DazzlinDonna · Comments Off
A week ago, I began my quest to find a new default search engine. Last week, I used Yahoo! exclusively. How did it fare? Just fine. I was perfectly content with it all week. I found what I was looking for 99% of the time, and the rest of the time, it was equally difficult to find what I was searching for anywhere else. So far, Yahoo is in the lead, and this week is MSN Live’s turn. Next Monday, I’ll report on whether or not it topples Yahoo from the lead spot.

SEM for emerging markets

Over the years, I’ve occasionally wondered what it would be like to do search marketing in other countries – especially those that aren’t on the cutting edge. Today, I got that question answered by an SEM firm based out of Portugal. What follows is their story. Thanks for sending it to me, btw.
