What could be better than SEO cartoons?

Gotta love SEOrefugee’s newest blog post, The Rep Whore, the first in a series of seo related cartoons. Every industry has its funny quirks, and SEO abounds with them. Hope to see SEOrefugee take advantage of all of seo’s hilarity by offering up new cartoons on a regular basis.

Creative for sure, but kinda dumb

Yesterday, I was talking about getting creative and using some original ideas to get traffic to your site in order to deal with the sandbox. So today, I lead you to an original idea from Brett Tabke of WebmasterWorld. He now has a blog - get this - in his robots.txt file!

That’s right. Check out www.webmasterworld.com/robots.txt

Scroll down the file and you’ll see his blog, in the form of commented lines. Now, c’mon, that’s gotta be an original idea. And because of it, he’ll probably get some nice links out of it. So, in that way, it’s a great idea. But…

Dealing with the sandbox

Let’s forget about the whole debate over whether or not the sandbox exists. Only a few people would say it doesn’t, so let’s move on and talk about what to do if your site is stuck in the box. There are several ways to deal with the situation, and which ones you choose depends upon your individual situation.

First, there is the DaveN redirect solution which involves duping the content on an old domain and using a 301 redirect to the new site. I’m not sure this will work in all situations, but it may be worth a try.

Second, you can ignore…

Search engines reacting as expected to site changes

I love it when the search engines do exactly what you would expect them to do. As expected, Google and Yahoo are dropping some old urls from the site, but have not yet picked up any new urls. Good old MSN is quickly starting to index the new urls. So many things about SEO are uncertain. It sure is nice when the predictable happens. I would have predicted this exact scenario to happen, and it is happening. Of course, it would have been more interesting to report the unpredictable, but sometimes the predictable is worth noting.

Boring boring boring

Can anything possibly be more boring than the possibilty of Google Pack - a few old products (trillian, adobe reader, etc) bundled with google? I mean, c’mon, how un-newsworthy or boring can you get? And yet the newshounds are jumping all over it as though it were the next great invention. I don’t get it. Are they so in love with Google that it’s news when Google farts? If Google Pack ends up being something more newsworthy than what it appears to be, then cool. Otherwise, shut up about it. Who cares?

New Directory Submission Tool

Wanted to point out a new tool on the market. It’s a directory submission package which enables you to quickly submit a website to hundreds of web directories extremely quickly. You can work through the list of web directories (it currently lists 100 free directories) and using the auto complete tool you can quickly enter your link details. I haven’t tested it much, but it seems to do the job. You can download a trial version at Submiteaze.

My last word on 302 redirect hijacking?

Oh so long ago, I started ranting about 302 redirects / 302 hijacking problems. Before I started ranting, others had been ranting for quite a while. If you want to refresh your memory, you can read my posts that date back to November, 2004 (shown below).

RSS Feed url is different so…

Ok, I figured out why my Bloglines subscription to my own feed was not updating since the move. The RSS Feed URL is now different, so I had to unsubscribe from the feed and resubscribe to the new feed, which is http://www.seo-scoop.com/feed/

This is a bummer, because I assume I will lose many of my subscribers. Oh well, life goes on, right? If any of you were previously subscribed to SEO Scoop, feel free to unsubscribe to the old one and resubscribe to the new one, using http://www.seo-scoop.com/feed/ as the feed url. Sorry about that, folks.

Some notes on the site move

In case anyone ever needs to do what I just did, I thought I’d share some of the process, and some of the problems.

WordPress has several scripts for importing from other blogs. However, my blog wasn’t in one of those formats, so my only choice was to use their RSS importer. That was cool, because I had already coded the script to import the latest 10 posts into RSS format (for the feeds), so only minor changes needed to be made to dump all the posts into RSS. Took about 5 minutes. Score 1 for that process.

At about that point,…

Surprise!

Ok, yesterday, I may have lied but unintentionally. As you can see, the change has already taken place. I found that it wasn’t as difficult as I expected. I can’t guarantee everything will be working perfectly yet, but whatever bugs crop up will get fixed asap. Hope you enjoy the new site.

New Year Brings New Changes

Over the next month, I will be working on making some major changes to SEO Scoop. I have decided to change from the ColdFusion blog script I have been using, to a more standard one - WordPress to be exact.
