Tidbits of Google knowledge

March 30, 2006 by DazzlinDonna · 3 Comments

Most of you have probably read Matt Cutts’ answers to his Monday Q and A thread, but I like to document things for the future. I often come to my own site here to search for a phrase that I know I have discussed before, but can’t remember much about it. So, here’s a few tidbits from Matt’s answers.

Rough day for SEO Scoop

March 29, 2006 by DazzlinDonna · 4 Comments

The hosting company where SEO Scoop resides had some major problems today, so all of the sites that I host there were down for a good portion of the day. I hate days like this. My stomach ties in knots. I fret. I start thinking, again, of moving to another host. I fret some more.

As you may have figured out by now, Yahoo! recently had an update, which a lot of people have noticed. The Yahoo! blog has a weather report (a little late, but better late than never). You can expect to see some rank shufflings, and increased crawler activity. They also tell you how to comment on the new index.

Big Daddy rollout complete

March 25, 2006 by DazzlinDonna · 1 Comment

Google’s Big Daddy rollout appears to have propogated through to all of the datacenters. What does this mean? First, it means some stabilization, as there won’t be such massive differences across dc’s in SERPs. But, more importantly, it means future changes will probably come fast and furiously.

A conversion technique

March 24, 2006 by DazzlinDonna · 6 Comments

I tried this on one of my sites, and it is has been working very well, so I thought I’d share it.

On my most trafficked pages, I added an affiliate link. I made the font size rather large, and the text rather colorful. I placed the link in a prominent place within the body of the text.

And speaking of press releases…

March 18, 2006 by DazzlinDonna · 2 Comments

Since I was recently talking about press releases, I thought I’d follow it up with a quick take on my most recent one. I got the most bang for my buck via prleap.com than I did with prweb.com. That may not be everyone’s experience, but for me, I got more attention with the $20 prleap option than I did with the $80 prweb option. Just something to consider…

March 17, 2006 by DazzlinDonna · 2 Comments

The judge in the DOJ vs. Google case ruled that Google is not required to give ANY user search queries to the DOJ. They do have to hand over 50,000 urls, but that is a much less than the DOJ wanted. More at the Google blog and the official ruling is here.

Some seo tools to check out

March 17, 2006 by DazzlinDonna · 1 Comment

I haven’t mentioned any seo tools in a while, so I thought I would point to SEOlogs. With McDar being down (anyone know why?), I figured some people might be desperate for datacenter checking tools and the like. SEOlogs.com has some good datacenter tools and other goodies, so check ‘em out. Just look in the left nav of their site to find them all.

The real value of Press Releases

Press releases used to have more impact on SEO than they do now, and the impact may lessen even more as time goes on. However, press releases still have value. I just released a PR over the last two days for a site of mine, and the response has been great. Lots of pickups, lots of visitors. That’s what it’s all about.
