Something else to consider with Big Daddy index problems

In a thread at SEORefugee, while discussing a site that is having the dropped pages problem, Michael (mvandemar) brought up a point that I think should be considered. He said in post #15:

Do a link: command in MSN, and then go through those results, and try to get an idea of how many of those are cached in Google. With the large number of sites dropping from G’s index, you may well have lost a large portion of what was powering you before. It happens.

Even if you have a squeaky clean site, with perfect quality links, you may have lost…

SEO rant

Since the stomach flu has hit my entire household, I’ve dragged myself to the computer just for a few minutes. I want to get this rant typed up and sent out so I can go back to bed and sleep in peace.

Webmasters, why do you refuse to see the value (or lack of value) of your site? Now, I’m not saying your site has no value at all. It might have lots of value. No, what I am referring to is the astonishment that some people have when told that their site doesn’t have Top 10 value. Search engine value,…

Review of Search Marketing Standard magazine

While I was away, the first edition of Search Marketing Standard arrived in my mailbox. If you recall, back on January 26 of this year, I excitedly posted about a new print magazine for the SEO world that would soon debut.

The first edition has arrived and I enjoyed reading through it. Sometimes, there’s just nothing like reading the printed word that you can hold in your hand and flip pages, ya know?

So, how was it? I would probably give it a grade of B. The first edition seemed to be geared more towards newbies and with a strong bent towards PPC over…

Matt and Big Daddy

While I was gone, everyone was buzzing about Matt Cutt’s blog post, titled Indexing Timeline. I wanted to consolidate pieces of his post as well as his later comments in one place, so that those affected by the Big Daddy crawl/index issues wouldn’t have to wade through hundreds of comments to see everything. I have intentionally left some bits out that weren’t germaine to the issue, or were just repeats of things said elsewhere, or were obviously part of the original post, so they were easy to find. Feel free to go to the original post to see everything. So,…

I’m back from vacation

Good to be home. Had fun while on vacation, but there’s nothing like home, eh? I have tons of catching up to do. Besides the several thousand emails to wade through, there were lots and lots of SEO news over the last couple of weeks. Expect to see some real posts (this is not one of those) beginning tomorrow.

SEO Crossword Puzzle

Something for you to do while I’m away. Noticed this in a thread at DigitalPoint and tried it out. It made for a fun few minutes. This little SEO crossword puzzle isn’t very hard, but it is entertaining. Enjoy.

SEO goes on vacation

My long-anticipated vacation is just hours away. I will be leaving the world of SEO behind for at least 10 days (possibly a bit longer). I leave the ups and downs of the search engine roller coaster ride in all of your capable hands. And if all of my sites’ rankings take a steep dive into the netherworld, I will blame you! :)

May all of your optimization dreams come true while I get away from it all.

Now I must go pack.

v7ndotcom elursrebmem contest almost over

Remember the v7ndotcom elursrebmem contest? It’s almost at its end, with just a couple more days to go.

I played along in the beginning mainly because I was itching to poke fun at SEOs, and it was a perfect time to do it. I then added a backlink to my forum signature at 3 or 4 forums, and that was the extent of my involvement.

I haven’t studied the leaders much, but it looks like coop weight and number of backlinks is counting for a lot, as well as some well-placed 301 redirects.

So, how has my page fared? Well, living off of mostly…

MODx CMS - Looks search engine friendly

I stumbled across a CMS system yesterday (literally Stumbled, as in I found the link via a site using stumbleupon.com). It is called MODx and is touted as an Ajax CMS and PHP Application Framework. Digging deeper, though, revealed that it is supposedly also search engine friendly, with se friendly URLs and the ability to handle unique titles and meta data.

I haven’t tried it yet, but it does appear to be easy to use, on the surface at least. It looks as though you use whatever code you want for the template, and then just throw in a few tags here…

DynamicDrive CSS Library

Sweet! Saw this over on the Cre8asite forum, and thought I’d pass it along. DynamicDrive now has a CSS library full of sweet CSS code and styles for you to use. Dont ya just love cut and paste stuff? From the DynamicDrive site:

We recongize the increasing importance CSS plays in your site, and we want to be there to offer practical, usable CSS codes just as we have with DHTML scripts. And with that said, our CSS Library is born. The new section is designed with you in mind, with an emphasis on CSS menu codes, all laid out in an…

A Google-bombing campaign for the E85 cause

Yesterday, I made a very off-topic post about an issue that I feel strongly about - E85, or ethanol. In one of the comments, Jason made a suggestion that I thought was brilliant. I’d like to start a Google-bombing campaign where we link terms such as “oil” and “gas” to E85 sites. If you find it in your heart to join me in this, please let me know, and I’ll be happy to compile a list of those who participate (with links to your sites, of course). Thanks, Jason, for the great idea.

ADDED: Jason mentioned that we should link to www.e85fuel.com, the…

Search Engine Friendly Layouts

While browsing the comments of a blog recently, I noticed a url (nofollowed) in a comment, that sounded interesting to me. And it was. Search Engine Friendly Layouts is a nice collection of 2-column, 3-column, fixed-width and liquid CSS layouts, designed to always present the main content first. Each layout includes very clear instructions for use. Big thumbs up for the site.
