Followup on HitTail and the Long Tail of SEO

About two months ago, I posted about HitTail (here and here). I think it’s time for another followup on this tool.

Looking at my HitTail stats today, it shows:

Top Ten keywords are 23.4% of all your search traffic.
Long Tail keywords are 76.6% of all your search traffic.
Total unique keywords collected: 2099

Wow, those numbers totally amaze me. I’ve concentrated on optimizing for about 20 or so phrases. But my visitors are largely finding my site from anything but those phrases! And in many cases, they’ve had to dig deep into the SERPs to find the link to my site. What if I had…

Want to see the best SEO tip published in a while?

I have to point out the best SEO tip I’ve seen published in a while. Andy Hagans at the Link Building Blog gives an amazingly clear insight into Google TrustRank. I mean, this is a lightbulb over the head kind of moment, folks. He brings together pieces of information that we already had into a brilliant view of how we can determine how trusted a site is. Kudos, Andy!

Cutts answers questions via video

As I recently mentioned, Matt Cutts took some webmaster questions, and has now answered them via video. His post is here, with links leading to the videos themselves.

Nothing ground-breaking in the videos, especially for experienced SEOs, but it is always a good idea to check in on what Matt has to say, even about the simplest things. You never know when you might need to quote him. :)

Googleguy gives us a few tidbits of information

Googleguy finally showed his face again over at WMW, and is discussing a few things that may be of interest to SEOs. I’ll do a quick recap of some of the things he said so far (or at least my interpretation of what he said):

  • Datacenter 72.14.207.104 is undergoing a new infrastructure, that is “orthogonal/independent of many other changes”. This new infrastructure should be complete near the end of the summer, at which time, he or someone may begin discussions about datacenters.
  • 72.14.207.104 is the datacenter which has more accurate site: queries as well as improving results for other queries as well.
  • The recent…

Yahoo! Weather Report - New Crawler

Yahoo! announced that they have implemented a new crawler, which will result in using less of our sites’ bandwidth. In addition, this new crawler means that you may see more or less pages in the index, and a shuffling of rankings as well. You can send feedback on observations or get technical support for the crawler problems.

Getting personal with SEOs

14thc.com is featuring several interviews with SEOs (10 in all). It is always fun to learn more about the human aspect of people we come in contact with on a daily basis, but may not actually “know”. Some of the interviewees may be SEOs you’ve heard of and some you may not. I think that makes it even more interesting, as we get a slice of life from different types of people. (Disclaimer: I am one of the interviewees). The 10 SEOs are:

Great reading for a Friday. Enjoy.

Internet ad pricing tools

Occasionally, I see people asking how much they should charge for either text links or graphic ads on their site. Frankly, there really isn’t a “standard” chart out there, although that would be a useful thing to have. However, I’ve compiled a list below of several link/ad pricing tools that may help you get a ballpark range of what your site is worth in terms of advertising pricing. Expect to see the occasional wide ranges from each tool, but some information is better than none, when trying to determine what price to charge.

Serial Link Bait

If you are planning on producing content that you believe will be link bait, consider doling it out a little at a time. I call this “serial link baiting”.

For example, if you are producing a tool, don’t put all the features in the first version. Make the first version good enough to generate lots of excitement (and links), but keep a few features in your back pocket. Later, a month or more down the line, present version 2 of the tool with a fabulous new feature. Now, you’ve got another link bait opportunity. Continue in this vein until you run…

And as a reminder, if you want me to shine the spotlight on one of your sites one Sunday, just email me the title, url, and description (email to scoop[at]seo-scoop.com).
