Serial Link Bait

by DazzlinDonna

If you are planning on producing content that you believe will be link bait, consider doling it out a little at a time. I call this “serial link baiting”.

For example, if you are producing a tool, don’t put all the features in the first version. Make the first version good enough to generate lots of excitement (and links), but keep a few features in your back pocket. Later, a month or more down the line, present version 2 of the tool with a fabulous new feature. Now, you’ve got another link bait opportunity. Continue in this vein until you run out of great new features, and you’ve churned out several serial link baiting opportunities.

The same can be applied to articles or information. Have you noticed how some people put out Part 1 and Part 2, etc. of articles? This is serial link baiting at its best. After everyone has read and linked to Part 1 of an article, and you’ve left them wanting to know more, you can dish out Part 2 a week later, for example, and have everyone clamoring to see it. Then they’ll link to that article, and will be waiting for Part 3.

Now, get to work on creating that fabulous link bait, and then serve it up slowly.

This wouldn’t be anything to do with my releasing 2 interviews in a week? ;)

2 in a week… I may have that beat. On Friday!

Serriously, Scoop, that’s good advice. I’ve strung out articles before and often the second part is doesbetter than the first. It gets the attention from the people that read the first article plus all the new people that get exposed.

My current project will be in at least two parts. As mentioned the first hits Friday. The second will hit later. Quantity and quality!

I started my link bait idea. I am not sure if it is the best thing to do but i am writing about the tool I am creating. I am not sure if it is serial link bait?

  1. [...] Another point of proof is the blog post series I started about Before You Build where my traffic dropped overnight. This may be because my viewers weren’t interested in the “pre-process” of building a site but I actually think it’s a matter of two dreaded words: Part 1. Serial articles infer a commitment from the viewer that I don’t think goes over very well. Donna at SEO-Scoop claims serial linkbait is a winner. And she may be right… I thought I had some success with it most notably with the follow-up SB article: More About Social Bookmarking but over the long-term the original article is still collecting links and generating traffic while the follow-up falls behind. More on this in a minute. [...]
