Google looks for patterns of linking to bad neighborhoods

Google’s Adam Lasnik clarifies what Google looks for in regards to penalties involving outbound linking.

First, he discounts a relationship between outbound links and the supplemental index, by saying,

It’s unlikely that your outbound linking is causing your pages to be listed in the supplemental, rather than main index.

He then discusses the fact that Google looks for patterns of linking to bad neighborhoods, rather than penalizing for the occasional bad link when he says,

Also, be assured that we’re not looking to penalize folks for a “bad” link here and there. Rather, our algorithms are tuned to look for patterns of “egregious” linking behavior……

What I have learned from a forced absence from the Net

Being forced to be offline for so long, with only the occasional dialup access, I’ve learned a few things.

1. No matter how much things change, not much really changes. Sure, over the past few weeks, there have been a ton of announcements about new products, etc. from the search engines, but for those of us in the SEO world, what has really changed? Nothing, really. Why then is it necessary to follow every single little thing that happens on a minute by minute basis? Answer: It is not necessary at all.

2. Most people still don’t get it. The average Joe…

SEO / SEM ROI Calculator

I just found an interesting SEO ROI Calculator tool from SEER Interactive. Since I’m still in non-work mode and have only a few minutes at a time to be online, I don’t have time to really test it out. However, it looks really cool, and if it works well, then it would be sweeet.

It includes the following form fields (and uses cool sliders to make adjustments):

Conversion Value
Budget
Campaign Length
Search Volume per Month
Click Through Rate
Conversion Rate
Lead to Sale Ratio

Each one has a little question mark icon that you can hover over to get the help tip for that item.

If you try it,…

Nice aggregation of SEO tools

BizGrowth has put together a control panel of SEO tools. The site lists and categorizes over 150 free online SEO related tools, ranging from keyword analyzers and meta tag generators to page rankers and site analyzers, with some miscellaneous tools thrown in as well.

I’ve used most of these tools before, but there are some I’ve never encountered, so it’s always fun to try new SEO tools. I like that each link opens the tool in a new window (or tab), so I can easily go back to the control panel to try another.

Collections of related things, whether those things are…

Internet summer is officially over

Well, that’s my take on it, anyway. Summertime is my worst season, when traffic and income falls to extremely low levels. Over the last two weeks, my sites’ income has increased over 3,500%. So, I declare Internet summer to be officially over. If you were waiting for your SEO efforts to produce during the upcoming holiday season, you should start seeing those efforts begin to pay off. On the other hand, if summer is your best season, you’d better start storing nuts for the winter. :)

The fall of a 50-ton truck

Ever seen a 50-ton truck fall through a septic tank? I have…today. Yes, that’s right. A contractor’s truck drove right into my brand new septic tank today. Busted right through the top of the tank and broke the tank into several pieces.

There have been so many problems with this move that this one was just…funny. I mean, what else can you do but laugh.

Google, please rethink some things

As I’ve mentioned, I’ve moved. This also means that I no longer have my old ISP. That means that I’ve lost an email address (the one associated with my ISP). Unfortunately, that is the email address I used as my login username for Google Adsense. I need to change my username now, or I will never get any email from the Adsense folks (and those of you who are into Adsense know that it is vital to not miss an Adsense email).

Now, I’ve had to go through the process of changing my Adsense email username once before, so I knew…

Quick update on my status

We are completely moved out of our old house now, but it will still be another two weeks or so before we are moved into our new place.

Not having net access is extremely irritating. Using someone’s dialup access right now. Sigh…

The move was terrible. I hired a moving company who did a horrible job. I think they hired idiots (or maybe drunks) off the street. Most of my stuff was stacked up OUTSIDE, because they didn’t put one second of thought into how to utilize the space available to put the stuff (which could hold twice as much as they…

Google is teaching SEO

softwareengineer99, in this WMW thread, has noticed something quite interesting. Adam Lasnik, Matt’s own cuttlet, officially Google’s first Search Evangelist, is giving a course in SEO to government employees at Catholic University on September 18, 2006 (and it’s only $30).

Here is the seminar outline:

  • Understanding search engines and search engine results (25 minutes)
  • Building crawlable, indexable, and well-ranked sites (45 minutes)
  • Tools, tricks and troubleshooting (35 minutes)
  • Break (10 minutes)
  • Webspam –what it is, how to avoid it, how to report it, etc. (10 minutes)
  • Live site evaluations (45 minutes)
  • Questions & Answers (45 minutes)

and here is what you will supposedly learn:

  • Understanding how search engines work
  • Effectively getting…

What was once 75 SEO interviews is now 92

On August 25th, 2006, I posted links to 75 SEO Interviews. That list has now grown to 92, so you might want to check out the new ones on the list. And again, if I’ve missed any, please let me know, and I will be happy to continue to add to the list.

Adding too much at one time is bad…confirmed?

Matt Cutts in an update to this post says “We saw so many urls suddenly showing up on spaces.live.com that it triggered a flag in our system which requires more trust in individual urls in order for them to rank…“. Now, I might be misinterpreting this statement, but it sounds to me like a confirmation that adding too much at one time will trigger a flag. It’s possible that just adding too many new subdomains causes a problem, but I would guess it may apply to pages or folders as well.

Whats in your attic?

Just when I thought I had 95% of the house packed up and ready to move, I remembered the attic. Just finished hauling everything down from there and have started the process of sorting through it all. Most of it is Christmas decorations, but there’s quite a few boxes of old memories. It’s been a hoot looking through all of that old stuff. Drivers licenses from my youth, a few pics of ex’s that I missed when I burned the rest of them, knick-knacks from world travel, and lots and lots of junk.

So, let’s relate this to SEO. What’s in…
