Wow, this is amazing. With every week, more and more SEO interviews come to my attention, and now there’s a total of 112 SEO Interviews (er, make that 113) in the list. Incredibly interesting reading, folks.

On paying attention and not trusting a script

Almost a year ago, I purchased a script to create search engine friendly urls and meta tags for one of my forums. One of its features was to create unique meta descriptions based on the first X words of a thread’s first post.

A few months later, I upgraded the forum software.

Since my memory sucks, I have to make some assumptions here. I believe when I first applied the se-friendly script, I checked that everything worked as it should. I assume that when I upgraded the forum software, something went awry, and I didn’t re-check that all the se-friendly options were…

Matt Cutts defines data push vs. data refresh - kinda

Matt Cutts, in a comment on his blog, explains the differences between the Google terminology “data push” vs. “data refresh”. Of course, we really don’t get a clue as to what either of them actually is…but well, I’ll let you read it for yourself.

A data push is a superset of a data refresh (that is, a data refresh is an instance of a data push). Typically a data refresh is something with a well-established history, e.g. we have automatic tests in place and the data to be sent out is sent out automatically (assuming that all the automatic sanity checks…

Custom Search Guide - Directory of CSEs

I see Google’s CSE (Custom Search Engine) product as the new Directory 2.0. Until now, human-edited directories were the natural medium for users who wanted a human-optimized guide to the web. A CSE, however, combines the best aspects of a directory and a search engine. Users are now programmed to use search rather than navigating through a directory structure, but a search engine generally gives the user much more than she wants - including spam and non-relevant results. A directory is much more likely to supply the user with precise, relevant results, but she may have to follow a lengthy tree-structured…

New Yahoo Bookmarks

Yahoo has a new (beta) online Bookmarks service (no, I’m not talking about del.icio.us). TechCrunch notes that it has around 20 million active users…from its previous version… (compared to only 1 million for del.icio.us).

This isn’t a social bookmarking service, but a private one. That works great for me. I’m not into the whole “sharing” thing. The concept is fine, but I just don’t have time for all of that. I do, however, need a really good way to manage my enormous list of bookmarks. It looks like this Yahoo bookmarking service will work perfectly for me.

I can arrange things in folders for…

Yahoo announces rankings shuffle and NOODP support

Yahoo just announced that they are going to implement the support of the NOODP meta tag, beginning tonight. In order to launch this change, they will be reindexing web content, resulting in typical ranking changes and page shuffling. So expect some possible movement of your rankings.

If you don’t want ODP (DMOZ) titles or snippets used by Yahoo, place one of the following meta tags on your pages.

META NAME=”ROBOTS” CONTENT=”NOODP”

or

META NAME=”Slurp” CONTENT=”NOODP”

How can we really use Google Custom Search Engine?

By now, you’ve all been inundated with the news that Google is offering up a custom search engine, so I won’t go into the details here and bore you to death. But my very first thought was, “hmmm….how can I get some SEO value out of this”?

What happens when you trim down a huge dataset into a much, much smaller one? You get a lot less clutter to wade through, right? Just seems like it might be a great opportunity to gain a little more insight into why one site might rank above another. Who knows, maybe there’s nothing to…

Google down - for some anyway

For me, Google is down (screenshots below). However, I can get to it via IP address, so apparently it’s a DNS issue. Just in case it was happening to you, now you know that it isn’t ONLY you.

SubmitEaze 2.0 update makes tool even better

Back in January, I mentioned a new directory submission tool that makes submitting to directories a pretty easy process. Now, a new version has been released, and SubmitEaze Directory Submission Software, with currently over 1600 listed directories to choose from, is even better.

Some of the new features include adding navigation controls for the web browser, a new tool to enable you to quickly import hundreds of your own directory listings from a spreadsheet, AND you can create your own categories to store your directories.

Some more cool new features are:

Setup rotating link title / anchor text and description text for each project.
