A bundle of SEO tools

You do use WeBuildPages’ great SEO tools, right? I mean, hey, they are free. Besides that, they give you all sorts of great info. I’ve been using some of the tools for a long time. I’d say how long if I really remembered, but I don’t. Just know that I’ve used them for quite some time, and if you haven’t been, you should really check them out.

Whenever I start to analyze a site for optimization, I always use both the Top Ten SEO Analysis Tool (I think it used to be called Cool SEO Tool), and the Backlink and Anchor…

Cool Wordpress stuff

I am in the process of setting up a new Wordpress blog. (Will share the url some other time). I haven’t gone through this process in a while, so I’ve discovered that Wordpress has gotten cooler. Well, not so much Wordpress itself. But Wordpress-related stuff.

For instance, since the last time I looked at all this stuff, there’s been something created called Wordpress Widgets. It’s not brand new, so I’m sure most of you already know about it, but for those of you who had their heads in the sand like I did, this is for you.

WP Widgets is this…

Dealing with a site undergoing the change

My oldest site, (circa 2000), needs to undergo a complete change. Everything, including the theme, platform, content, hosting, and design needs to be completely redone. This is a task I’m dreading, not only because it’s going to be a fair amount of work, but because of the SEO value that may be lost. The question to be answered is how much SEO value will be lost…if any?

One page of the site will basically look the same, but will direct users (via a manual link) to another brand new site. Products that have been paid products for all these years…

Internet discounts and coupon codes

This is not SEO-related really, but well, I just don’t have anything to say about SEO today. Instead, let’s talk about discounts. A few weeks ago, I ordered a laptop bag from ebags. After I placed the order, ebags thanked me by giving me a 20% off special link for the next time I made a purchase. I eventually deleted that email, but never emptied my trash, so that email was still around.

Last night, I decided it was time to buy some new luggage, especially since my old luggage got a little messed up on the trip PubCon Vegas. So,…

Mountain Commerce 6.0 - search engine friendly ecommerce

While at Pubcon, I had a chance to chat with the friendly guys from Mountain Media about their new search engine friendly ecommerce package, Mountain Commerce. I was interested in the product, because truly se friendly commerce packages are pretty difficult to come by. Sure, things are getting a little better out there, but much of it just isn’t perfect. So although I was impressed by Mountain Media’s sales pitch, I decided to reserve judgment until I could do a little testing of a demo once I got home.

Now that I’ve been through the demo, I’m still impressed. The feature…

Adam Lasnik on link exchanges

Adam Lasnik said on Google Groups:

…reciprocal links have been around forever, and Google doesn’t frown on engaging in reciprocal linking in moderation.

The key here is, indeed, moderation :) . If, say, 90% of your backlinks are reciprocal, that’s probably not going to improve how our algorithms view your site. Or worse, if 90% of your backlinks are reciprocal and not likely to be of interest to your user.

But exchanging links here and there — *especially* when done with clear editorial judgement (e.g., you’re not just accepting dozens of link exchanges willy-nilly) — that’s not the sort of thing Google looks down upon.

Hope…

Egg on webmasters face - or is it?

I have to relate a very humorous story that happened at Pubcon a few days ago. Please read all the way through because the ending is special.

It always amazes me that anyone would volunteer their sites during the site review portion of a conference. I mean, here you have the search engine reps looking at your sites. That just gives me chills. In any case, the first couple of sites were decimated by the reps due to the webmasters’ having numerous duplicate sites, which Matt Cutts found within seconds. By the time these sites had been hashed through, the reps…

Data push going on with Google right now?

Looks to me like a data push began on the 16th and is rolling through still. I’m seeing major changes on a couple of sites and have seen a few others mention it around the web. Looking at the datacenters shows differences of several hundred places in ranking in some cases.

Anyone else seeing anything?

4 PubCon SEO tips and tidbits

A couple of snippets of SEO tips/tidbits mentioned at the conference that I wanted to note while I still remember them:

If a url has no cache link in the Yahoo SERPs….it’s probably got a penalty on it.

Matt Cutts said the only urls in the supplemental index are those with not enough PageRank to be included in the regular index. A few links could pull it out.

Have a site that has a local presence? Claim your site via Google Local. You’ll get a postcard via snail mail which will then allow you to edit your listing, allowing you to get keywords…

Quick note and link

Guy Kawasaki was the keynote speaker this morning here at PubCon, and he was one funny dude. Very entertaining speaker. And since he begged us all to link to him, I thought I’d throw him a bone. LOL. So, here’s a link, funny guy, and I’ll definitely be reading your blog more often now that I know how entertaining you are.
