There has been some discussion recently about whether or not I should be accepting money in return for reviewing a product, site, or service. One reader suggested a poll, so I’m obliging that request now. I would love to have your opinion on the matter.

Podcasts seem like such a great idea, but they just don’t work for me. Why? Because while I’m listening to them, I find that I’m not really listening. My mind wanders off to other things, or I’ll start reading a blog post from somewhere, or I’ll start typing a blog post…like this one, for example. Yes, right now, I’m “listening” to a podcast, but obviously as I type this, I’m not really listening.
I try hard to listen, I really do. But about 30 seconds into a podcast, my mind ends up elsewhere. Is that a problem just with me, in…

When was the last time you ran Xenu link checker (or any similar tool) on your site? Every so often I like to remind everyone to check for links leading to 404s. No matter how diligent I am about keeping my sites up to date, I never fail to find some bad links when I run Xenu. Why do I care, you may ask? Because in the past, I’ve found that getting rid of links that lead to nowhere can help my rankings (note that I have no absolute proof that there is a correlation between dumping bad links and rankings,…

This morning I was bored and decided to read some blogs that I forget to read on a daily basis. In my travels, I noticed that Jim Westergren changed the design of his site (not sure when) and noticed for the first time that he includes lots of personal posts amongst the normal SEO stuff. I never realized that Jim was such a prolific writer and was especially interested in writing science fiction short stories and novels. I like the concept of seeing a more rounded view of a person that I virtually know. We all spend a fair amount of…

This is way, way too funny. I’ve included a small, teaser image here of the cartoon, because I didn’t want to steal the thunder from the original. Check out this hilarious SEO Cartoon.

As you have probably heard by now, SEMPO, which describes itself as “a global non-profit organization serving the search engine marketing industry and marketing professionals engaged in it”, has recently announced the SEMPO Institute. To quote them once again, “The Institute offers online distance learning courses that will provide a breadth of search marketing instruction from Fundamentals to Advanced Search Advertising.”.
Their FAQ page gives much of the information necessary for learning about what the Institute is offering, and details the program nicely. Basically, they are offering 3 training curricula: SEM Fundamentals, Advanced SEO, and Advanced Search Advertising (PPC). SEM Fundamentals…

Every so often I see people discussing whether or not it is still worth getting listed in a web directory. I usually see the idea shot down as being ineffective and not worth the few minutes of time it takes to get a listing. I disagree with that stance. Directory listings are still beneficial. I get actual visits from directory listings on a daily basis. That in itself is a worthy use of my time to get the listing. But it is still helpful from an SEO point of view as well. A clean link from a relevant directory page…

I’ve been asked to do a review of SEO Inc’s SEO Toolbar v2.0. The following is a paid review.
I have to start out with some negatives here. First of all, I’m not a big fan of toolbars simply because they take up browser space. But if the functionality is worthwhile, then I’d certainly consider giving up the space for it. So, I downloaded the SEO Toolbar so that I could do a thorough review of it. Here’s where things went wrong. Normally, I use FireFox as my browser, but apparently the toolbar doesn’t work with FireFox. I say “apparently” because…

I’m a fan of the one and only SEO print magazine out there, Search Marketing Standard. I’ve discussed it several times in the past. The Spring 2007 edition will be arriving in mailboxes next month sometime, and guess what? I’ve got a short article in it. I was honored to be asked to contribute to the magazine, and I did my best to make it read-worthy. It started out being a long, rambling article, but an editor “convinced” me to trim it down substantially. LOL. That’s why there are editors in the world…to keep us from rambling.
So check out…

I checked out two very different site comparison tools yesterday, both of which could be useful for different SEO purposes.
The first is Quantcast, which is similar in scope to Alexa. If you look at myspace as an example, you’ll see lots of demographic data, numbers and types of visitors, other sites the audience visits, and lots more interesting details. You can compare up to 5 sites. (Hat tip to Chris Rizzo).
The second is Delexa. This site uses the top 50,000 sites (as determined by Alexa) and uses del.icio.us tags to rank them. I’m sure there are various uses for this data,…

According to the UK Times, Google is “working on a system that would allow readers to download entire books to their computers in a format that they could read on screen or on mobile devices such as a Blackberry.” This will apparently be a part of Google’s Book Search service.
Electronic books have been around for quite some time and have never really taken off. Who know, maybe its time has come, but I just don’t see it. I’m as geeky and in love with electronic gadgets as the next person, but I’m also an avid reader, and I prefer a…

When did subdomains start appearing in a Google site: search? In other words, a site:www.somedomain.com used to only show results with urls from www.somedomain.com.
Now, subdomains are showing, such as sub1.somedomain.com and sub2.somedomain.com.
Ok, here, try some for yourself.
Blogspot
About
Craigslist
Just in case you don’t see what I see (or things change), here’s a screen shot of a site:www.about.com command.

Ok, so what does it mean?
Well, it could just be yet another site: command foobar. Certainly wouldn’t be the first time site: gave weird results.
On the other hand, it could mean that Google no longer considers subdomains to be separate sites. That could be a big thing!
What…
