I love milestone forum posts
by DazzlinDonna
I think I’ll try to mention milestone forum posts more often, because 9 times out of 10, these posts are filled with words of wisdom. I’m talking about a forum poster’s 1000th or 3000th or 5000th type of posts. The poster generally puts a great deal of time and thought into that particular post, to “give back” to the community he or she has been a part of. So here’s one that cropped up today at SEOrefugee – Robert Paulson’s 1000th post.
Robert lists 19 bits of advice and I’ll quote a few of my favorites here.
Timing is everything. I never realized how important it can be until I heard something on the radio in the morning, blogged about it in the afternoon, and by the next day was already receiving traffic for related searches. Since then I’ve lucked into other timely posts that have really been nice for getting traffic.
If you can, be funny. If you can’t be funny, be smart. If you can’t be smart, do something else (know your strengths).
If you run a contextual ad program like AdSense or YPN, unless you’ve tested ad layouts simultaneously in the same positions over a period of time (use some rotating ad software like OpenAds), you really don’t know what ads perform and what ads don’t. Don’t assume the pretty ads work the best. You might be richer by trying to win ugly.

Thanks Donna – You don’t know how flattering it is to have part of that post appear here.
You made my day!
Donna:
Some years ago you printed a spectacular milestone post….I think it was 1,000 also. It got a lot of other people to do the same and created a lot of thoughtful helpful posts of immense value.
It was several years ago. Now I’ve gotta go back and read it. I wonder how much is still valid (imho) subject to all the changes that se’s have made.
Definitely, though many good people have generated great milestone posts. In my experience you were the first…or did someone else do it before you.

I have to assume some did it before me. I seriously doubt I was the first. But I know which one you are referring to. It was quite some time ago, and I barely remember that far back, but I do remember doing it.
