Google backlink update - Google loses backlinks

Just a quick tidbit here. Google is currently updating backlinks, which have not yet propagated to all DCs. The tidbit is that Google lost quite a few backlinks in this update, going from 1,750,000 to 1,480,000 reported links. Yahoo also lost some, going from 1,990,000 to 1,780,000. MSN, on the other hand, gained considerably, going from 1,130,000 links to 1,440,000 links, inching closer to both Google and Yahoo.

For comparison purposes, the #1 spot for “Click Here” (Adobe download page for Acrobat) has gone from 1,340,000 to 1,250,000.

Keep in mind, of course, that Google only reports a sample of all backlinks that it knows about, so the actual numbers may be vastly different. But it’s a “play with numbers” kind of day, so it seemed like a fun thing to share. (Meaning… don’t flame me thinking that I believe the Google backlink numbers actually mean anything).

P.S. SEO Scoop has gone from 743 links up to 860, so thank you to all out there who have tossed me some link love in the past few months. Now, if you’d just toss me a couple million more, I could beat out the Big Three search engines!

Hat tip to Michael.

If you are the first to "discover" any of my posts in StumbleUpon, one of the following categories would probably be the most appropriate to place it into. You don't have to choose one of these, of course, but based on what I usually write about, there's a good chance any of my posts will fall into one of these categories.
