I love milestone forum posts
March 18, 2007 by DazzlinDonna · 3 Comments
I think I’ll try to mention milestone forum posts more often, because 9 times out of 10, these posts are filled with words of wisdom. I’m talking about a forum poster’s 1000th or 3000th or 5000th type of posts. The poster generally puts a great deal of time and thought into that particular post, to “give back” to the community he or she has been a part of. So here’s one that cropped up today at SEOrefugee – Robert Paulson’s 1000th post.
Citizen Journalism: Assignment Zero
March 17, 2007 by DazzlinDonna · Comments Off
Wired News has an interesting article about an experiment called Assignment Zero, which is a collaboration between Wired, NewsAssignment.net, and well..ordinary folks. It’s a long piece to read, and the Assignment Zero experiment adds even more detail, but it is incredibly interesting. I haven’t even clicked through all the links yet, but I’m getting there.
SponsoredReviews Review
March 17, 2007 by DazzlinDonna · 1 Comment
Back on January 11th, 2007, I posted about an upcoming review service called SponsoredReviews. I’d discovered the site, which was still in Beta, from a link in Jarrod Hunt’s (of TextLinkBrokers) email to me. I was intrigued because it sounded as though it had taken the best aspects of currently running review sites, and added some new features that would be beneficial to all.
Graywolf puts the smackdown on SEO bloggers
March 17, 2007 by DazzlinDonna · 2 Comments
Graywolf’s first video blog is entitled “SEO Bloggers Step Away from the Keyboard“, in which he tells SEO bloggers to forget about posting SEO news. He basically says that there are already a few sites reporting the news and they have the industry contacts and good writers to do so. Everyone else should find something else to talk about, because no one is reading them anyway. He then got a couple of negative comments about it.
Test Case: Google, Yahoo, MSN: Finding new content
March 16, 2007 by DazzlinDonna · Comments Off
Joel Bresler emailed me this morning and since his email is self-explanatory, I present it here (slightly modified):
———-
I have recently launched a web site dedicated to the American folk song, "Follow the Drinking Gourd." The site presents an interesting test case, for the following reasons: First, there has been virtually no new research on Follow the Drinking Gourd in twelve years. Second, this site represents the most comprehensive research published on the song. Third, some web pages that recently ranked highly on a "follow the drinking gourd" search just a few weeks ago were removed in February. I analyze search engine performance on several different parameters: Read more

Things I (and others) have noticed about Google SERPs
March 14, 2007 by DazzlinDonna · 2 Comments
- Constant changes, which may involve a number of factors coinciding including data refreshes, different datacenters using different datasets and/or algos, filters being tweaked, knobs being turned up or down. These changes are seen several times a day, every day, for months now. Forget about personalizaton making it difficult to track rankings. The constant changes alone makes it difficult to track rankings.
- Pages suddenly becoming uncached, that have previously been cached for a long period of time; most recently, with pages that are a root of a subdirectory, such as mysection/, products/, etc.
- Different pages other than the "best match" being returned in the SERPs, usually with a much lower ranking. Looks like Google gets confused about which page should be returned. Normally, the best match page is returned at some level of expected ranking (usually high), but sometimes the best match page disappears from the SERPs, and some other page reappears, with a much lower ranking.
- Some rankings are on a cycle. People see rankings disappear on a Monday for example, only to return on a Wednesday or Thursday, disappear again the next Monday, reappear the next Wednesday, etc. on a constant basis. The days of the week here are examples only, and differ with each person. But for each person seeing this, the cycle is very predictable.
Have you been Plutoed?

In a comment on WMW, walrus used a term that cracked me up, but I think it’s a great one. He said, ” I have been plutoed as well”. I’m not sure if he was the first to use the term or not, but I’m giving him credit for it unless I hear otherwise.
151 SEO Interviews…and counting
March 8, 2007 by DazzlinDonna · Comments Off
Wow, the list of SEO interviews just gets longer and longer. Ok, everyone, my original list of 75 SEO interviews is now up to 151, and I’m pretty sure I’ve STILL missed some. So, please, if you know of any I’m missing, let me know. In the meantime, read these interviews till your eyes bug out.
eComXpo March 20-22
March 8, 2007 by DazzlinDonna · Comments Off
eComXpo is a fun little online event that you can virtually attend for free. (You can also pay to have access to special presentations). I attended it last year (I think it was last year), and it was a fun business-oriented way to spend my time. At that event, I stuck with the totally free options, but I will probably choose to pay for some of the special presentations this time around. At $4.95 per session, I don’t mind springing a few bucks to see some hopefully good SEO speakers.
More about moi

The latest interview I did is now up on the ViperChill blog. Speaking of SEO Interviews, the last time I updated my master list of SEO interviews was October 31st. There’s somewhere around 112+ listed now, but I know there have been more since last Halloween. If you had an interview that isn’t listed, or know of someone who did, please list them in the comments below so I can update the list. Thanks.
Gain advantage in untapped areas

I wrote an article for the Spring edition of Search Marketing Standard, in which I coined the term MAD SEO, which stands for Moderation and Diversity. Because the editors wanted a short summary type article, I didn’t list the many aspects of Internet marketing that have woven their way into SEO’s lives over the last few years. The polls you’ve been taking over the last week here, have been an attempt to both list some of those diverse SEO tactics, as well as gauge whether or not we are actually using them. Some of the feedback I received from the polls were along the lines of “Gee thanks, Donna, for pointing out all the things I’m NOT doing!”. My response to that is “Hey, don’t feel bad. I don’t cover all that ground either!”
Poll Series Number 2
March 5, 2007 by DazzlinDonna · 1 Comment
Last week, you participated in the first of a series of polls. Today, I have the second in the series available. The second is very similar to the first, but instead of asking which activities you have not yet focused on, this one asks you to select the TOP FIVE activities that you believe search marketers should focus on today. (Once again, if you use Firefox 1.5, you may have trouble selecting items. Some kind of bug…).
