Do you still get SEO surprises?

If you’ve been in the SEO world for a while, let’s say…oh…at least 2 years, do you still get any real SEO surprises? Maybe you try something different, and see results you weren’t expecting? Or is everything pretty much “expected” by now? Just curious on a hot, muggy Saturday afternoon.

First, knock down the rankings obstacles

An old client of mine got in touch with me about three weeks ago, begging for help. Over the last couple of years, their site has lost all its rankings and they were desperate for change. I agreed to help with the following terms:

  1. I would only be able to give them one, possibly two, months of my time.
  2. Most of that time would be spent training them to do the work, rather than me doing the work. (Teach a man to fish kind of thing).

During the last few weeks, the training has taken up a large portion of the time, which…

Goo Goo Ga Ga Google Onesie

Goo Goo Ga Ga Google If you laugh at geeky humor like I do, you’ll laugh at this Goo Goo Ga Ga onesie available for your baby. I’m not sure I would dare attempt to put a Google-inspired outfit on any of my grandchildren, but I’d sure be tempted to try and slip this one on. I mean, c’mon… Goo Goo Ga Ga! How funny is that! It is funny, right? Right???

Please laugh so I don’t feel like a complete dork.

Thank you.

Final reminder and a link for your newbie friends

Final Reminder: Less than 48 hours left to get in on the contest. Also, if you have newbie friends or family who are looking to get into the whole Internet game by having a site of their own, and you want to avoid extensive hand-holding, you might want to point them towards a new ten-part series I just completed over on my DazzlinDonna blog. It’s called How to Make a Living in Your Pajamas, and it’s aimed at the average person (not you) who wants to create their first site and make some money from home. In other words, it’s…

Link love for a good cause

A couple of months ago, I participated in a charity meme, and today I want to link to a site for a different, but similar reason. G-Man, our old bud who has been fighting cancer for years, is hoping to get the word out about how everyone can help find cures for cancer and other diseases. He’s got all the details about how you and I can help find cures, and I absolutely HAVE to pass on some link love to him for that.

Search engines be damned! I don’t care what anyone thinks of me linking to a well-known…

Are you my social network friend or just a social spammer?

I admit that I’m not one of the big social network gurus with a ton of “friends” on places like Facebook. But I’m savvy enough (I think) to understand the difference between a real connection and a fake one. If you and I are complete strangers, and you are going to waste your time and mine in attempt to befriend me via some social network, at least have the brain cells to fake some sort of connection between us.

I am constantly being bombarded with “friend requests” from social networks such as Facebook and MySpace. Most of them are from people…

Making the case for utilizing social media

Social media is influencing and impacting business results in incredible ways. Some businesses are finally beginning to understand this and are starting to ask how they can use social media to drive positive results. Cymfony has released an interesting, free white paper that does a good job of outlining the enormous impact that social media is having. For example, they note that 24% of online car shoppers have changed their mind about a vehicle purchase based on social media. That’s a pretty astounding statistic, I think. So, what do car dealers do to have an impact on that? How do they…

Best Domain Name Finder Ever

Ok, the title of this post sounds a bit Digg-ish, but honestly, DomainsBot is truly the best domain name search service I have ever seen. Let me explain why I think that.

Let’s say you want to start a site dealing with Linux software, and you want the domain to be keyword rich. So you type in the phrase [linux software] and click Search. You’ll get a nice long list of domains with various .tld’s, and in various states of availability. You can then start whittling down the choices by creating some filters. Filter out some of the .tld’s for example, and…

Reinclusion is now Reconsideration

When did Google’s “reinclusion” request become a “reconsideration” request? I suppose when they decided to allow webmasters to beg for forgiveness for actions that resulted in penalties rather than outright bans, they realized the term needed to be changed. In any case, I was pleased to see the new terminology in Webmaster Central. It makes sense now.

Linking because I laughed

Despite the fact that I am about to link to a post that is nearly 2 months old (gasp! the horror!), this post made me laugh today, so today you get to laugh at it too. I don’t care if you laughed at it 2 months ago. Laugh again!

Google Webspam Initiative

Here’s a taste of what you’ll find.

The website mentioned above sells paid links - I know because I paid them to link to a competitor of mine

ASK Campaign (no, not that one) bombs

For a while now, I’ve been noticing a referrer in my logs from a search on Ask.com for [Search better now], which has been sending visitors to an old post of mine. It’s been nothing more than a passing curiosity for me, until today. Today, I came across an Ask ad. See below.

Ask ad

Ah-ha! So THAT’S why so many people are searching for that phrase. Ok, so I headed over to see what results Ask is giving for that. Yes, there I am, in the #2 position for that search. And oh my goodness, the results for that search across the…
