Plodding your way to success
How creative are you? On a scale of 1-10, I’d guess I’m a 6 or maybe a 7 when it comes to being creative. But I’m not that creative all the time. Some days, my creativity level is more of a 2 or 3. However, I’m certain I’d be within the 8-10 range on the nose to the grindstone, crank out the work product scale on any given day.
You can find search success via many avenues, but they don’t always have to involve creativity. Nor do they need to involve some big, hidden, secret SEO knowledge. Granted, the more you know, the better, and the more creative you can be, the better. But honestly, I attribute more of my success to my “nose to the grindstone” work ethic than to any creative SEO maneuvers. You can be successful just by doing the following, several hours per day:
- Stay focused
- Work, don’t play
- Know what needs to get done
- Actually get something done
- Start a task
- Don’t sweat every tiny detail
- Finish a task
Nothing in that list has anything to do with creativity or a secret SEO sauce. But assuming you use common sense in knowing what tasks need to get done (creating content, networking, etc), just the act of focusing on and accomplishing tasks will most likely bring about the success you dream of. It may not happen as quickly as it would if you came up with that one BIG, CREATIVE IDEA, but that doesn’t make the success any less sweet.
Not feeling creative right now? Then just get plod along, grind it out, and get some non-creative work done. You might be surprised at the result.

Very nice post! I use almost the exact same technique when doing web design/development. Some of it takes creativity and some of it doesn’t. When I don’t have any creative juices flowing, I work on non creative stuff, and vica versa.
Just keep it moving forward. A few sprinkles/drops of creative juice can get you a long way most of the time.

Creativity is a two stage process… sponge and splurge.
If you’re not feeling that creative, you may just be in a sponge phase… try to grab a film, read a book, visit a gallery, that sort of thing.

The nose to the grindstone get it done attitude is definitely something I struggle with when it comes to websites. Working through that stage between the rush of launching a site and the time when the big traffic comes is a daunting task for me. I really believe that separates the successful from the flash in the pan sites. Unfortunately I’ve had more of the latter than the former but I’m workin on it.

I need to print this out and hang it on the wall. Creativity is not a problem, however, distractability, boredom and lack of discipline are.
