Rewarding With Link Love

by DazzlinDonna

I’ve just installed one of the many dofollow plugins that are available, so that I can reward those of you who have spent time contributing your thoughts and opinions here. I’ve never been totally against nofollow. I approve of things that discourage spammers from clogging up our spaces and forcing us to waste our time. On the other hand, I don’t approve of throwing out the baby with the bathwater, so I don’t think nofollow should be used across the board, any more than I think dofollow should be used across the board.

I looked at the options and decided to go with a plugin that is configurable so that frequent commenters can be rewarded for the giving of their time. I think that’s a good compromise, and is also fair in just a real world kind of way. So for those of you who haven’t just dropped a link in a drive-by, you’ll probably see a little extra link love coming your way.

I probably should have done this long ago, but better late than never, I guess. :)

That’s nice thing you are doing. I might want to try that out on my site, can you give us an update after a week or so if how easy it is to use that plugin?

No need to wait a week. I can tell you right now it was dead simple.

  3. Donna I’ve been thinking of doing the same on my own blog in part to reward those who have been commenting and in part to gather a few more comments in the future.

I’ve yet to install anything, but my thinking was the same as yours that I would do something to reward people after they had made a certain number of comments (I’m thinking 10). That way it wouldn’t encourage people to leave a couple of quick meaningless comments, but rather reward those who are truly contributing.

So you mind if I ask which of the plugins on Andy’s list you went with? I was leaning toward ‘link love’ but haven’t really investigated them all yet,

I used link love, but changed it to less than 10. I’ll keep the exact number unknown, but I thought 10 was way too much.

  5. Hello Donna,

I saw you recently paid a visit to my new blog. Getting rid of the nofollow is an excellent idea and I will definitely look into this. It sounds like it’s in everyone’s best interest! :)

    All the best,
    Brian

I was about to say be prepared for a lot of spammy comments but it seems theres a clever limit in that plugin :)

I just installed the plugin too. I think that there are a lot of advantages not just for my commentators but also for me and my readers.

The Do follow plugin helps to add valuable content to your blog by encouraging comments. I often write a post and the comments left by my great readers are just as insightful as my original post. This is a win-win for everybody.

  8. Hi Donna,

I just installed the do follow plugin. I am glad to see this discussion here. I think that those who comment frequently on a blog help enhance the conversation and should be reworded. I always wonder why people refuse to reword those who comment regularly on their blog.

I use Blogger, and I replaced the default “nofollow” tags with “follow” tags in the source when I first started. I noticed them while tweaking widgets in full source. I was surprised they would be default like that with no settings…..So I blogged it and told the Blogger commmunity how to change it. Was a pretty popular post! I just edited the post to include your post on the plugins! Thanks!
