When A Two Year Old’s Birthday Party Knocks You Down

Today is my 2 year old granddaughter’s birthday. Yesterday, we held a birthday party here at my house for her. Remind me never to do that again. Seriously…remind me. Just in case I forget the fact that every tiny microscopical bit of my body hurts. That was all way more action than my normal day entails, and I’m way too old to deal with it all. My muscles and joints are very, very mad at me. I’ll probably go back to bed soon and stay there for a large part of the day. Therefore, thinking about SEO is just too.much.effort.…

htaccess Generator Tool

Jeremy Steele has just released the alpha version of an .htaccess generator tool. While it’s not yet complete, it is still useful, so I thought I’d pass it along. Even if I only ever use it to quickly generate www/non-www redirects, it’s worth bookmarking. He’s going to be adding help files and other goodies in the future, but there’s no reason not to use it as is now. I’ve got it bookmarked for future use.

Of course, be careful with .htaccess files. Make sure you don’t overwrite an existing file, and double-check everything so that you don’t accidentally block the search…

What Is Missing In Your SEO Campaign?

magnifying glassLook around your site. Now look around your competitors’ sites. What’s missing? I’d bet something is missing. What topic hasn’t been explored, explained, or expounded upon? Which user question has never been answered? What diagram has never been drawn? What podcast has never been heard? What screencast has never been shared?

Users are looking for something in your niche that they can’t find. I guarantee it. Figure out what it is and give it to them. Optimize the page for the appropriate search terms, share and socialize it, and OWN that search.

Be an SEO detective. Find what’s missing and be the…

Sounds Like MSN Is About To Kick Some….

Wow, sounds like MSN is working on some really kickin’ features. Todd Friesen (oilman) is live blogging the MSN Searchification event, and he’s pretty impressed with some of what he’s seeing. Some of the highlights from his post:

  • MSN has grown there index to over 20B docs
  • san jose weather - results in page. Don’t need to click away.
  • 1 click directions. You click the link in the email and it shows you the destination and then gives you a handful of pre computed directions. you then click the route that is the direction you’ll be coming from. It’s pretty cool. Most users…

A Question For Google Groups

For whatever reason, I can never post to the Google Webmaster Help group, because I always get the dreaded An error was encountered while trying to post, please try again later. error. So I’ll relate here what I’d LIKE to be able to post there, and perhaps someone will relay my message for me.

In this thread, Adam Lasnik is asking for some general questions that they can answer. I have a question, which I’ll post here, and hopefully it will be relayed to the group. Whether or not they choose it to answer is another story, but I’d at least like…

How Much Is A Site Review Worth?

I almost never do any kind of client work. I’ve said that time and time again, however, there are some rare occasions where I’ll take something on, and when that happens, it’s almost always in the form of a site review (or site audit, depending upon what term you’d like to use). I don’t have time to devote to ongoing client work, so a one-time review, with some follow-up Q&A via email to clarify the review’s points is all I can generally commit to. But when it comes time to tell someone how much I charge for a site review,…

Massa Gets The Tough Guy Award

sick pillsHoly sickbeds, Batman! Bob Massa has dealt withmalaria, and then typhoid fever and then salmonella and then a urinary infection all in the last 16 days“, and is still tough enough to blog and call someone out. Heck, I don’t even remember who or what he was calling out, because all I could think about was how tough he was to have gone through all of that recently. That’s gotta win some kind of award, in my book, Bob. Hang tough and don’t let anyone ever tell you that you’re a weenie. We know better!

Get well, man. Get well soon.

What Obligation Does An SEO Blogger Have?

There’s been lots of talk lately on the subject of SEO bloggers backing up statements with facts. I absolutely don’t want to discuss the specific events or the people involved that prompted the discussion, and that’s my prerogative to do so. I do, however, see value in the broader discussion itself, so I’ll give my thoughts on the general questions involved in this heated debate. I’d love to hear your thoughts as well.

First, do bloggers of any type need to provide backup data or proof of the things they state or imply are facts on their blog posts? Second, does the…

ClickBot Autopsy

Neil Matthews from Fraudulent Clicks presents a guest post on Google’s analysis of ClickBot,A, a software bot which launches click fraud attacks.

Deep inside area 51 at Google’s HQ in Mountain View California an autopsy of an alien invader was performed by highly skilled technicians.

Only joking, what really happened was that a piece of malicious click fraud software known as ClickBot.A was dissected and a white paper on it’s modus operandi was created by Neil Daswani and Michael Stoppelman of the Google click quality team.

The paper entitled The Anatomy of Clickbot.A can be downloaded for review, but this post aims to take…

SEO, PPC and SEM Jobs Portal

There’s a new Search jobs portal in town. Well, actually, it’s way across the big pond from me, over there in London, I think, but it serves the UK, USA and Canada, so that’s local enough for me! Paul Griffiths contacted me to let me know that SEO Vacancies Ltd. has launched an SEO, PPC and SEM jobs and careers portal for the Search Engine and New Media Industry.

Paul had this to say:

Having researched the market for a while it was apparent that there were limited options for SEO and related professionals when it came to looking for their next, or…

Google Finds, Admits To, and Fixes DNS URL Timeout Issue

A week ago, after Barry reported about a Google Groups thread , I followed that up with my Google Butterfly Effect post, and its follow up post.

Barry then asked in the Groups thread yesterday if there was any resolution to it and Susan replied:

It was an issue on our end, and should be cleared up now. Thanks for
all your reports!

If anyone is still seeing DNS-related errors in their Webmaster Tools
account, check the “last found” date. If it’s dated before today, wait
for us to recrawl the URL and the error should go away; otherwise,
feel free to post the details here and we can look…

SEO Cartoon Quiz

Find out if you are an SEO expert or not by taking this quiz. Don’t worry, it’s short and it’s fun because you are choosing answers based on cartoons. I got 100% right, as you can see by the screenshot I took. But even if you get them all wrong, it’s still a fun waste of time for any SEO geek.

Hat tip to Debra for pointing it out to me.
