Happy Halloween, All You SEO Scoopers.
SEOs are masters at disguise, don’t you think? Therefore, I have to assume that each of you is very creative when it comes to dressing up in a Halloween costume. I thought I’d just ramble on a bit about Halloween today, and ask you to do the same.
A few Halloween remembrances for me include:
- The time I went to my boss’s house for a Halloween party and I thought the Abominal Snowman was my boss…until he kidnapped me and threw me in his truck. Luckily, I was rescued before it went any further than that. The…

A few months ago, I suggested that you think like a blogger. I deliberately left the suggestion simple and vague, but I may have been a bit too vague. So, here’s one more hint to help you understand my message.
Not everyone has a blog. Those who do, understand clearly the concept of working with social media and asking for votes (diggs, reddits, sphinns, stumbles, etc). You supply little icons at the end of each post so people can easily vote for the post, right?
But if you don’t have a blog, you may not be utilizing these services and you should.…

Ok, I’m going to post this knowing full well that what I am about to say is completely against what all the smart people would say. In fact, it even contradicts what I say much of the time. And it directly counters a comment made today by one of my most “favoritest” people in the SEO world, Debra Mastaler. Sorry, Debra, despite the fact that you are “right”, I still feel compelled to take an opposing viewpoint today.
Debra said:
For millions of people to depend on one search vehicle for the majority of their revenue is unbelievable. If Google died tomorrow, what…

I saw someone say in some forum somewhere that Google was going after those sites in which the link seller’s motivation was the passage of link value (i.e. PR). That’s what has been sticking in my craw for a while but I hadn’t had the time to let it simmer and gel in my head until now.
In other words, WTF? You have to be kidding me. The motivation of a person selling links, the LARGE majority of the time, is much simpler than that. The seller is monetizing his site. Period. And if the buyers are concentrated in a handful…

How much trust can you place in the algo of a company that gives a PR3 to Youtube, for crying out loud? Let’s see. Either…
- Google mucked up the entire PR thing, and the whole thing has been just a huge mistake on their part, with nothing being intentional.
- Google really did purposely punish some sites and somehow their finger slipped and they also punished THEIR OWN SITE, giving Youtube a PR3.
- Some combination of the above
I’m really starting to wonder about the geniuses they hire.

Ok, all of you out there (and you know who you are) who have been sitting up on your high horses proclaiming that everyone else is stupid for getting upset about the PR changes - STOP IT! You are the ones who aren’t getting it. When it comes right down to it, people, it’s not about the little green bar. It’s all about CONTROL. That’s what has everyone upset, whether or not they really know it.
No one likes to feel like a puppet on a string. Google is the puppeteer (or Googateer) and webmasters are the puppets. At any given moment,…

Ok, the poll from yesterday has received 71 votes so far, which isn’t a lot, but I still wanted to just throw some thoughts out there about the results anyway. In my opinion, the first two options, still buy them at the same price as before and still buy them, but pay a little less for them both reflect a situation where you could basically say that nothing much would change in the scenario where all text link ads suddenly no longer passed any value. All of the other options would represent a major shift, again, in my opinion. So, I’ve grouped…

Please take the following poll ONLY if you already purchase text link ads (from anywhere). If you don’t, the poll has no meaning for you. The poll is completely anonymous, so participating won’t out you in any way.
I’m just curious how the text link ads marketplace would change if there was ABSOLUTELY NO WAY a purchased link could pass any link juice. So, let’s just play a “what if” game. What if all text link ads suddenly functioned as though they were nofollowed… If you already buy link ads, how would you then answer the following question? (Remember, your participation doesn’t…

Looks like the toolbar PR updated today, with many sites losing lots of green. Problogger alerted me to it, since it noted that its PR went down to a 4, as did Copyblogger’s. Some of my sites saw a lower PR, including this one. However, I’ve still got great rankings and traffic for things I track, so there’s no direct reflection there. If PageRank falls, but rankings and traffic stay the same, does anyone hear it drop?
I don’t really pay attention to other sites’ PageRank, so it’s hard for me to tell who droppped and who didn’t, so if you know…

Some of you know that this is my busy season, but I’m still managing to find time to squeeze other things in. Just thought I’d share what a couple of those things are, and do a bit of shameless promotion while I’m at it.
First off, I’m a staff columnist for Personal Branding Magazine, and the new issue is coming out November 1st, just a little over a week from now. It’s going to be packed with articles (38 pages, 37 authors), and includes an interview with Philip Rosedale (Founder of Second Life), and more. Subscriptions are reasonably priced, and all…

- Has the time come for Digg-style social voting search engines?
- Can a search engine present algo-based results that can then be further influenced by user votes?
- Are users comfortable enough with the concept of voting at this point to be able to marry digg-style voting with normal search?
- And if socially-influenced SERPs become a reality, will we attempt to game it and subsequently ruin it?
- If a new search engine can successfully accomplish such a goal, will users switch to it?
Let’s attempt to answer each of those questions. First, let’s take questions 1 and 2 together.
Has the time come for Digg-style social voting search…

Have you ever noticed the links to my social profiles that I’ve got listed in the left sidebar? Yeah, it looks just like the screenshot you see here. I coded that sidebar section by hand, but I’ve been bugging someone to make a tool that would make generating that list easy. I bugged, and bugged, and bugged, and annoyed the crud out of him until he finally decided that programming the tool was much better than listening to me drone on and on about it.
So, finally, you too can generate your own little snippet of code that you can…

Yesterday my Yahoo search error 999 problem was solved when I obtained a static IP address from Hughesnet (my new satellite internet service provider). Apparently, the dynamic IP I was getting was being blocked by Yahoo. Anyway, to test things out and make sure I could use Yahoo search again without error, I attempted to think of a search term to enter. That’s actually hard to do when you don’t really need to search for anything. So rather than strain my brain, I searched for [dazzlindonna].
Now, we all know that Yahoo enhanced their search page lately, and the Search Assist…
