What If All SEOs Went Underground?

underground signWith Jim Boykin considering the idea of no longer blogging, and in light of the fact that I talked about SEOs coming out of the woodwork yesterday, with nearly 15,000 SEO blogs out there, the question begs to be asked: What if all SEOs went underground?

If SEO bloggers and SEO forums disappeared (or went into deep privacy mode), would that be a good thing or a bad thing? I can see pros and cons of each.

On the pro side, the search engines would take much longer to catch on to tactics (yes, even those that are on the white side). For example, let’s say a new Web 3.0 type of directory-style site were to start proliferating, and the use of them would be very beneficial for rankings. Let’s say I discovered this but kept my mouth shut about it. First, I’d have less competition for a while. Second, there’d be less people abusing it, and third, the search engines would probably take longer to discount it.

On the con side, a lot less information would be disseminated to the average web person, and they would be left to guess at nearly everything. For newbies, it might be very difficult to succeed, especially if the only information being “leaked” is wrong.

Even if the current crop of SEO bloggers were to go underground, wouldn’t we just see more emerge? So would it even do any good at all? If Jim quits blogging, won’t there be someone else to take his place? If all of us stopped, wouldn’t that just open up the field to others? Would it make any difference at all? Somehow, I don’t think it would. I seriously doubt the SEO world could truly go underground at this point. What do you think? Should we all stop blogging?

If you are the first to "discover" any of my posts in StumbleUpon, one of the following categories would probably be the most appropriate to place it into. You don't have to choose one of these, of course, but based on what I usually write about, there's a good chance any of my posts will fall into one of these categories.

Business * Computers * Computer Graphics * Computer Hardware * Computer Security * Databases * Ecommerce * Internet * Internet Tools * Linux/Unix * Marketing * Search * Self Improvement * Web development * Weblogs(Blogs) * Windows * Writing

    Hi,

I’m new to SEO but think if all the current bloggers went underground hundreds of others would leap at the chance to be seen… and heard on their opinions/tactics.

I love these blogs as they expand my knowledge

Thanks and keep up the good work!

There are tens of thousands of SEOs that just read stuff. They never blog, and never add comments in blogs. They read forums, and never join them or comment in them. They have always been invisible and will mainly remain so. The “core” of “well known names” isn’t actually all that big.

Funny idea, but not very realistic….

Funny…I recently commented that there are web marketing firms reproducing like rabbits. We are giving away the farm so to say. There are too many people who think that they can do-it-themselves.

It would be just like it was trying to do SEO 10 years ago - when Danny Sullivan’s ’search engine watch’ paid content was the only place you could find anything resembling a tip.

And we spent hours stumbling around in the dark trying to guess the algorithms of the 6 main engines - and all this at a time when we had to put up with such things as engines differentiating singular and plural and upper and lower case keywords.

I think there would be an another group stepping right into the void. Nature abhors a vacuum, society does as well. And from the looks of it my apartment doesn’t seem to like vacuums all that much either,
