Hodgepodge of things

Today’s post is just a hodgepodge of things. First up, I wanted to address my thought process since I asked if you’d mind if I posted less. After reading your comments, and thinking about it some more, I realize that the benefits of feed readers does make this an easy decision. I can post less, without feeling guilty because I’m not meeting some self-imposed expectation. So, from now on, I’ll be posting when I have something to say, and on those days that I don’t, I won’t stress over it. Who knows, maybe that will even improve the quality of the…

Nobody Wants A Google-Friendly Link - At Any Price!

want a linkI love Scratchback and the whole concept behind it (Scratchback is that widget to the right that says Are You In My TopSpots?). I might not be totally crazy about the nofollowed links, but hey, they are Google-friendly, so I’m doing the “right thing”, right? I understand people don’t want to pay a lot of money for G-friendly links - I get that. But when it’s difficult to practically give them away - what’s up with that???

Most of the Scratchback links you find on blogs are priced in the $1-$5 range. I was selling them for $1 here on SEO Scoop…

Using Social Profile Pages To Your Advantage

social profilesIt seems as though every day we are being invited to join yet another social network (YASN). If we actually spent time at each of these social sites, participating and becoming respected contributors, we would never get anything else done. It’s just not practical in terms of time for one person to become a valued contributor at all of these sites. (If you have a large team of social network monkeys working for you, you can ignore what I just said. ;) )

I do, however, encourage you to at least sign up with each and every…

MSN/Live Ponies Up About The Referrer Spam

About 3 weeks ago, I said it was Past Time For MSN To Pony Up To The Real Truth About Referrer Spam. Now, they have.

Since that time, I’ve had the opportunity to discuss some of these issues with Jeremiah Andrick, the Program Manager of Live Search Developer Tools. He and the team of Live engineers* have addressed these issues and have issued a statement, answered questions, explained what it is all about (hint: they are checking for cloaking), and noted what they’ve done to solve the problems created by their new spambot. They’ve also created ways for you to address…

Admission of Guilt Will No Longer Be Required For Google Reconsideration Request

Kudos to Michael for prompting Matt Cutts to agree that it is time to remove the requirement that one must admit to guilt, even if one believes he is innocent, before one is able to request reconsideration for dropping a Google penalty. Matt says:

Michael VanDeMar, just to give you a quick update, I dropped an email to someone at Google to request that we remove the text “I believe this site has violated Google’s quality guidelines in the past.â€? from the checkbox in the reconsideration request form, and I requested some other modifications to the language of the form as…

Less PageRank Floating Around In SEO Niche

Matt Cutts says in a comment over on a pretty interesting post at SEOmoz - we did do a full PageRank update several weeks ago - there’s less PageRank flowing around in some areas (e.g. search and SEO). Vanessa Fox’s site dropped by one as well, and for her as well, it’s just a case where less PageRank is flowing in some niches of the net. PageRank doesn’t always monotonically increase.

There’s lots of other good info from Matt over there too, but that one bit about there being less PR flowing through the SEO niche got me wondering…

Some people have been…
