Take A Moment: Is It Time To Change?

Let’s start this post out with a couple of quotes: one old and one new.

Albert Einstein supposedly said, “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.“. I’m sure we all occasionally bang our heads against a wall, repeatedly, without even realizing what we are doing. I know I do. I assume you do too.

Someone recently wrote this about me in a forum post. “She is always coming up with something new to think about. Or something that you haven’t thought about for a long time, that you darn well should have! The best webmaster “tickler…

Online Reputation Management Guides

Glen Allsop (aka ViperChill) asked me if I wanted to take a look at his new ebook that he has just published, All You’ll Ever Need to Monitor and Manage Your Reputation Online, and of course, I said yes. I’ve watched Glen rise up to be a very knowledgeable young man, and I was anxious to see what he has to say about online reputation management. I know that he has decided to steer his company in that direction (moving slightly away from SEO), so I was definitely curious.

He is selling the ebook for $19, and I think it’s definitely…

Make Those Image Hotlinkers Give You Backlinks!

Ever get tired of people stealing your bandwidth because they hotlink your images? I used to have Myspacer’s sucking my bandwidth dry because their pages got so much traffic, and they were using my images for their backgrounds, etc. There are several ways of dealing with this issue, one of which is showing a different image to them than they bargained for, but there’s a new widget script available now that is even better - it gets the thieving hotlinkers to give you a backlink! Woot!

LinkMyPics is subtitled The Hotlink Advantage Maximizer. By using this script on the images you want…

Open Source Support Not Always Very Supportive

I warned you there would be more rants on the way. Here’s one.

I love open source apps. Really, I do. Free is so warm and welcoming, isn’t it? But open source support - well, that’s a whole ‘nuther ball game. That’s not always so warm and welcoming. Let’s take one example. How about, hmmm… WordPress! I love WordPress, I surely do. But trying to resolve a problem at their forums is often like trying to cut off your arm with a butter knife (both slow and painful).

Sorry, Lorelle, I have the utmost respect for you, but telling us to get help…

Terrible Landing Page Rant

Be forewarned: I may have several rant posts coming at you over the next few days. Here’s the first.

Let’s get one thing very, very clear. A good search ranking is wonderful … but for all that is sacred in the geekdom, please don’t ruin a perfectly good ranking with a terrible landing page!

Being the geek that I am, a large proportion of my daily searches are for software, scripts, or applications of one sort or another. Unfortunately, a large percentage of the landing pages that I am directed to from those top 10 rankings are so bad that they immediately…

I noticed something interesting about the trackbacks in my spam filter the other day. Something that’s been reinforced by Yahoo Site Explorer’s link checking tool. I’ve suddenly been getting lots of links from sites I’ve never heard of…

Google Gives Advice For Those Who Have Their Sites Hacked

A little over a week ago, I asked for an open discussion for dealing with the jerks who hack into sites to deface them, to install malware, or to surreptitiously insert hidden links to bad neighborhoods. (And if anyone wants to argue semantics of hacking vs. cracking again, take it up with Google this time - I’m just repeating the terminology they used).

Now, Google has written a long post giving advice on how to deal with this problem if it happens to you. They detail taking your site offline, assessing the damage, recovery, and restoring your online presence. Their post isn’t the…

Badges Work. Flattery Works. Badges + Flattery Works.

If something has worked in the past for more than one person, there’s a good chance it will work again in the future for another person. Don’t hesitate to emulate success.

Site badges have been around for a long time. They worked well in the beginning and a little less well as time went on. But make no mistake. They still work. If you supply people with code to place a badge on their site, some people will take you up on your offer. They will. Seriously.

Flattery has been a marketing tactic since the stone ages. Flattery has always worked well.…

Landing Page Optimization

One of the problems I face when I create a site is that I don’t have formal training in every aspect of site development. I assume that’s true for most lone webmasters/SEOs. If I was just one small part of a large company, I would most likely wear one or two (sometimes three) hats, and the rest of the hats would be worn by other company employees. But when I create a site, despite my lack of training in all areas, I have to do my best to fill every role myself.

I’m confident in my ability to optimize a…
