Outsourcing. That’s a word that is fraught with fear but tinged with curiosity for many, including me. I want to be able to utilize the cost-savings of outsourcing, especially to places like India, but I worry about getting ripped off. Bob Massa understands that fear and…

Matt Cutts, Why Am I Still Being Punished?

I dumped text link ads. I nofollowed paid links. I javascripted links that might be mistaken for paid links. I canceled my sponsored review accounts. I switched to a different method of monetization (Scratchback) that serves Google-friendly, nofollowed links. (And btw, Google, that put a huge dent in my revenue, just so you know). Finally, after I cleaned up everything that might possibly make you hate me, I filed a reconsideration request about 5 weeks ago.

And I did all that for…what? Did you give me my PR back? No, you did not. Did you even communicate with me to tell me…

Community Begets Community

There are a lot of pros and cons to having an online community associated with your site. The cons mostly center around having to manage people within the community (dealing with flamers, etc.). But the biggest pro, in my mind, is that community begets community. If you manage to get even a handful of core community members who are passionate about your site, they will inevitably spawn new members as they tell others about it. And much of the time, their enthusiasm for the site will filter down to the new members, causing them to be enthusiastic as well. It…

Go 1 Day Without Any Search Related News, I Dare Ya

Call me crazy, but I’d like to suggest that you (yes, you and you and you too) refrain from reading any search industry news (blogs, forums, etc) for the next 24 hours. Actually, let’s say tomorrow (Friday here in the US), will be totally SEO blog free.

Hey, don’t throw rotten tomatoes at me just yet. I have solid reasons. Hear me out. We all need a break from “news” and “conversation” once in a while, just so we can actually put on our “work hats” and get a few things done. Tell me I’m wrong. Tell me you couldn’t stand…

SEO Scoop Nominated For A SEMMY Award

2008 SEMMY NomineeThere’s a new awards site that hands out awards for the best search marketing post / article. It’s been dubbed the SEMMYs, and it’s a great collection of some outstanding posts. I noticed that SEO Scoop has been nominated in the Social Media category for my Using Social Profile Pages To Your Advantage post. Very cool. Apparently, these long nominations lists are going to be reduced down in size to a much smaller pool before voting begins, so I’m not sure if I’ll make the final cut or not, but it’s very cool to be included in this round at least.

I love…

Promote Your Fans To Evangelists And Watch Them Become Linkbuilders For You

If you’ve done anything right in your brand management, you’ve probably managed to gather some fans. These fans think you (or your site, product, or brand) is the best thing since sliced bread. Have you noticed them? Have you really noticed them?

Here’s a thought. Communicate with those fans. Pick a few of the ones that have the widest influence and give them an actual title. Promote them to “Official [brand] Evangelist”. Give them a badge that they can proudly display on their site or social profiles. Your encouragement and official approval of their extreme fan-dom will prompt them to evangelize…

No You May Not Have My Credit Card Number

Since speaking about SEO apparently gets me labeled either as an idiot or a pretentious windbag, I’m going to switch gears and mention something totally unrelated to SEO.

In late November, PayPal introduced a new feature that I’ve only just noticed - the PayPal Plug-in.

PayPal’s blog describes it this way:

The plug-in is a free download for your Internet browser that allows you to pay with PayPal anywhere MasterCard is accepted online. If PayPal isn’t accepted at the merchant’s site, the plug-in generates a Secure Card number – a unique 16-digit number that can be used to debit funds directly from your PayPal account.

Another great feature of the plug-in is that it eliminates the need to re-enter your billing and shipping information when shopping online

Mourning The Loss of WeBuildPages SEO Tools

It’s a sad day. WeBuildPages has decided to remove their awesome tools from public consumption. Granted, you can still get them (plus lots more) with their new Internet Marketing Ninjas program, but the “free” tools are history. (Yes, there’s a few still available, but not the really good ones!).

I have no doubt the new program is excellent, but I’m still going to pout about losing those great free tools. :(
