Ever get tired of people stealing your bandwidth because they hotlink your images? I used to have Myspacer’s sucking my bandwidth dry because their pages got so much traffic, and they were using my images for their backgrounds, etc. There are several ways of dealing with this issue, one of which is showing a different image to them than they bargained for, but there’s a new widget script available now that is even better – it gets the thieving hotlinkers to give you a backlink! Woot!

I love open source apps. Really, I do. Free is so warm and welcoming, isn’t it? But open source support – well, that’s a whole ‘nuther ball game. That’s not always so warm and welcoming. Let’s take one example. How about, hmmm… WordPress! I love WordPress, I surely do. But trying to resolve a problem at their forums is often like trying to cut off your arm with a butter knife (both slow and painful).

Over the last few months, I’ve been encouraging others to guest blog here on SEO Scoop. The idea is to draw attention to you and your blogs (or sites), and help build exposure for up-and-comers in the search marketing world. A little over a week ago, I asked for an open discussion for dealing with the jerks who hack into sites to deface them, to install malware, or to surreptitiously insert hidden links to bad neighborhoods. (And if anyone wants to argue semantics of hacking vs. cracking again, take it up with Google this time – I’m just repeating the terminology they used).

One of the problems I face when I create a site is that I don’t have formal training in every aspect of site development. I assume that’s true for most lone webmasters/SEOs. If I was just one small part of a large company, I would most likely wear one or two (sometimes three) hats, and the rest of the hats would be worn by other company employees. But when I create a site, despite my lack of training in all areas, I have to do my best to fill every role myself.
High Five To Google For Selling Off SEO Business

I’m extremely pleased to see that Google will be selling off the SEO portion of Performics. They’ve split the company up (that they acquired in the DoubleClick deal) into two parts – affiliate and search marketing. The search marketing division will be sold, and that’s exactly what we all hoped would happen. That whole “conflict of interest” thing was just way too much, and it really needed to be taken care of. Good to see them address it so quickly.
