Judging by the past, sometime in the next 30-45 days, Google will pull something that is going to freak SEOs out. It’s that time of year!

Just sayin’ …

You Going To WordCamp Birmingham?

I know I’ve already blogged about WordCamp Birmingham (Alabama) over on my DD blog, but for those of you who don’t read that one, I wanted to make sure to bring it up here too. It’s the first ever WordCamp in the Southeast United States (Sept. 27-28), and I’m going to be speaking at it. Yes, I’m nervous, but y’all will just have to deal with the occasional “um, er”, and stutter. I’ll be speaking on SEO for WordPress though, so even if I stumble over my words now and then, the information will still be useful.

The cost is only $25,…

Although there are many URL shortening services out there like TinyURL, the newest one to hit the netwaves is Cligs, and it’s a winner (and free). The most obvious gotta-have-it features are the built-in analytics reports. Every Clig you create is stored in your own private account and reports are available to track:

  • Recent mentions of the clig itself on twitter
  • Recent links (mentions) of the clig on blogs

  • Recent mentions of the destination URL on twitter
  • Recent blog links to the destination

Image Optimization - Insights from Patents and Tests

I can probably count on one hand the number of times I’ve blogged about a forum thread, but this thread on image optimization from Cre8asite forums is one to read. Let’s face it, there’s not a lot said about image optimization, so any time I find information like this, I do a little seo dance. Here are just a few snippets from the thread to entice you to read further.

Regarding a Microsoft patent:

Basically there is an image relevance scoring system, i.e. algo input and/or filter (details follow)

And a text-image relevance scoring system (details follow)

And then Yannis chimes in with some observations from testing:

Tell Your Stupid SEO Story To Win Ipod Touch

win ipod touchHey, this is a fun little contest that Scott McAndrew has going. He is collecting stories about stupid mistakes and blunders that supposed SEO “gurus” have made. He won’t be publishing company names, so no need to include that. Just detail a horror story you’ve encountered. Had a client come to you after being shafted by some search “expert” or even one of the big SEO firms? Tell Scott about it in a paragraph or two, and you could win an Ipod Touch. Pretty cool prize, and just about everyone has one of those stories to tell. So head on…

For SEO Newbies - Check your site: search now and then

Although this is for SEO newbs, it never hurts to remind even the most experienced SEO to check the basics now and then. Go to google.com and type this in:

site:www.yourdomain.com (or site:yourdomain.com if you don’t use www)

Look at the results for your site: search. Is the same title repeated over and over again? Is the same description repeated over and over again? Especially in the case of the titles, you are losing out on the most effective on-page SEO tip there is. If your page is about chocolate cake, but your document title is MySite.com (because it is just using the…
