Getting a measure on social media metrics
June 30, 2009 by James Duthie · 4 Comments
One of the primary barriers I encounter when talking to businesses about social media implementation is measurement. For years, web marketers have sold the virtues of web marketing via its’ accountability. Clicks could be tracked, conversions could be measured & ROI was accountable to the very last dollar. Yet the emergence of social media blurred the lines of online accountability. The direct response environment that we’ve all become so used to on the web was suddenly replaced by a channel more suited to relationships and referrals than instant sales. Which made the job of measuring results a heck of a lot harder. But rest assured, with tangible objectives in place and usage of the appropriate tools, marketing initiatives in social networks can be measured just as effectively as other online channels. Even projects with objectives related to fluffy marketing outcomes such as customer engagement and attitudinal shifts are accountable. The key is simply to quantify those objectives.

With A Little Help From My Friends
June 3, 2009 by Barry Welford · 1 Comment
The title of that popular Beatles song captures an approach to help your website better achieve its goals. Some years back you might have thought the key to that was to make your website very visible in Google keyword searches. That is still very important. One feature of the Internet is that a search engine like Google can aim to catalogue all the information so that people may readily find what they are looking for. Search engines will certainly display your web pages if you do the right things in SEO terms.
10 Reasons Why Visitors Do Not See Your Calls To Action

When you think optimization, the word may well suggest a tuning process for something that is already working fairly well. If something is not working then making it work is not optimization but some other more heavy-duty task such as repairing or troubleshooting.
A New Free WordPress Tool That Rocks My World
June 18, 2008 by DazzlinDonna · 14 Comments
Ok, maybe I’m easily pleased, I don’t know, but when a tool can save me a long, long, long, mind-numbing boring amount of time watching files slowly ftp up to a server, over and over and over again, for what feels like forever…I tend to fall in love with that tool.
Essential Firefox Addons That Work With Version 3
June 2, 2008 by DazzlinDonna · 6 Comments
When I made the switch to Linux, Ubuntu automatically installed the beta version of Firefox 3. When I then replaced Ubuntu with Kubuntu, I was given Firefox 2 as an additional choice, but I’ve stuck with the beta of FF3 nevertheless. This did mean, however, that I would have to do without some of the extensions I’d used with FF2, because not every extension is FF3-ready. Luckily, I needed to pare down my extension usage anyway, and this forced me to evaluate what extensions I really, really need.
New Social Alerter Tool Released
February 8, 2008 by DazzlinDonna · 5 Comments
eKstreme has finally released his Social Alerter tool. I beta tested it several months ago and thought it rocked, so I’m happy to see it available to the public. What is it? It is a tool that monitors the upcoming lists at Digg and del.icio.us and alerts you via email if the site you are tracking is about to be inundated with traffic from these sources. Ever made the front page of Digg? How’d your server hold up? Did it crash? Chances are, it did, making your front page Digg experience less than joyful. With a heads up, you can be prepared. Running WordPress? You’ve got time to turn wp-cache on. Whatever methods you might use to keep the server running are useless if you don’t know the tidal wave of users are coming.
Video: Someone Make It Easier

I spent the entire day (and night) yesterday editing a video. This video, which was on my camcorder, covered a span of two years. We got the camcorder a month or so before Hurricane Katrina hit, and the first shots filmed were taken after we moved to a small camp (shack) to live in while our area was put back together. The camp is all about “getting back to nature”, so we did get some pretty interesting nature shots. If you aren’t squeamish, you can watch along as we watched a snake fight a large fish, for example.

See the original creator’s site for any help or info you may need about the plugin.

Layout Grid Overlay Bookmarklet for Web Pages
May 8, 2007 by DazzlinDonna · Comments Off
Andy Budd created a very cool bookmarklet (which Marcus Breese made even cooler) that allows you to overlay a layout grid on top of any web page. But wait, it’s so cool, that even if you overlay it after you’ve scrolled down a ways, it still puts the 0,0 corner right where it should be. You have to really see this to get how useful it can be. When you go grab this bookmarklet, scroll down till you see the [UPDATE:] because you’ll want to use the show/hide layout grid bookmarklet, so that you can click it on / click it off. Click on / click off. Click on / click off. Oops, sorry, got a little lost in a Karate Kid moment there.
Ok, go download this while I get into my one-legged Crane Stance.
Finding the right web host

It’s not just about SEO. I’m sure we all realize that. So much more goes into creating a successful website, and I’ve decided to start discussing some of those other things now and then. Don’t worry. SEO Scoop will still be primarily about SEO, but it won’t always be the only focus.
