Ok, the poll from yesterday has received 71 votes so far, which isn’t a lot, but I still wanted to just throw some thoughts out there about the results anyway. In my opinion, the first two options, still buy them at the same price as before and still buy them, but pay a little less for them both reflect a situation where you could basically say that nothing much would change in the scenario where all text link ads suddenly no longer passed any value. All of the other options would represent a major shift, again, in my opinion. So, I’ve grouped…

Please take the following poll ONLY if you already purchase text link ads (from anywhere). If you don’t, the poll has no meaning for you. The poll is completely anonymous, so participating won’t out you in any way.
I’m just curious how the text link ads marketplace would change if there was ABSOLUTELY NO WAY a purchased link could pass any link juice. So, let’s just play a “what if” game. What if all text link ads suddenly functioned as though they were nofollowed… If you already buy link ads, how would you then answer the following question? (Remember, your participation doesn’t…

With Jim Boykin considering the idea of no longer blogging, and in light of the fact that I talked about SEOs coming out of the woodwork yesterday, with nearly 15,000 SEO blogs out there, the question begs to be asked: What if all SEOs went underground?
If SEO bloggers and SEO forums disappeared (or went into deep privacy mode), would that be a good thing or a bad thing? I can see pros and cons of each.
On the pro side, the search engines would take much longer to catch on to tactics (yes, even those that are on the white…

For whatever reason, I can never post to the Google Webmaster Help group, because I always get the dreaded An error was encountered while trying to post, please try again later. error. So I’ll relate here what I’d LIKE to be able to post there, and perhaps someone will relay my message for me.
In this thread, Adam Lasnik is asking for some general questions that they can answer. I have a question, which I’ll post here, and hopefully it will be relayed to the group. Whether or not they choose it to answer is another story, but I’d at least like…

There’s been lots of talk lately on the subject of SEO bloggers backing up statements with facts. I absolutely don’t want to discuss the specific events or the people involved that prompted the discussion, and that’s my prerogative to do so. I do, however, see value in the broader discussion itself, so I’ll give my thoughts on the general questions involved in this heated debate. I’d love to hear your thoughts as well.
First, do bloggers of any type need to provide backup data or proof of the things they state or imply are facts on their blog posts? Second, does the…

In an earlier post, I mentioned that I’d noticed a Google ripple take place on September 7th, with rankings being heavily affected for some sites, although I expected it was probably a narrow set of sites. A few days later, I think the fact that I called it a “ripple” was a foreshadowing of what really happened.
Barry pointed out an interesting Google Groups thread that caught my eye. Not long before I saw Barry’s post, I noticed something odd in my Google Webmaster Tools for the site that was part of the earlier “ripple”. I was seeing the error “We can’t currently…

Yesterday, some sort of little ripple or wave occurred in the Google rankings. I’m not yet sure if it was a data push or a filter adjustment or an algo change, but it was enough of a blip to be noticeable to a segment of webmasters. It may just be one of the many ripples that occur constantly, but this one was a bit more noticeable than others. I’m not sure yet. If you saw the wave ripple through and have any thoughts on it, let me know. If you didn’t notice it, then you are probably in the majority.…

Google is self-serving. Google’s policies are sleazy. Google’s hypocrisy increases their profit margins. Google has proven untrustworthy.
Those are just some of the things that Aaron Wall says about Google in his latest interview over at LinkJuicy. Interesting reading.

The one thing I’ve done a few times successfully in the past is to capitalize on a new trend before everyone else does. Generally, being a geek, that means I tend towards taking advantage of new technologies, grabbing a great domain name if possible, and then getting a site with some content up before the rest of the world catches on. This makes my site a leader, or an early adopter, and that makes SERPs domination just a little bit easier.
One thing I don’t tend to do is capitalize on non-geeky trends, such as fashion or non-electronic consumer goods. But…

Today’s post is from a guest blogger, Khalid Hajsaleh, Thanks, Khalid!
Regardless of the type of website you have, when your site visitor takes the action you designed for them to take, a conversion occurs. In the case of an e-commerce website, a conversion happens when a customer places an order. On a lead generation website, the conversion happens when the customer fills a contact form. When a visitor subscribes to an RSS feed on a blog, a conversion happens.
But let’s face it, if you have operated a website for any amount of time then you must have faced the…

Apparently, the Paid Links session at SES San Jose this week was quite the spectacle. Oh how I wish I could have been right there in the midst of the action while the search engine reps tried in vain to defend their positions against the big, bad SEOs. Luckily, others have done a great job of giving blow-by-blow playbacks.
Of course, the reality is that paid links work, and any good SEO will advise you to stay under the radar whenever possible. The big ad networks will need to do what they can to obfuscate their inventories so that Big Brother cannot…

Raise your hands if you’ve been around this industry long enough to remember Bob Massa and the Google / Searchking thing. Bob has since peeked into various forums and blogs (such as Threadwatch) on occasion, but we haven’t been lucky enough to have him around on a really steady basis - until now. Bob now has his very own blog, and that’s a good thing. Sure, you think, we need another SEO blog like we need another thorn in our backside. Well, actually, Bob might feel like a thorn to some people now and then, but that’s part of his…
