Search Marketing and The Persuasion Principles

Way back in 1993, long before any of us were optimizing sites, Robert Cialdini published a book titled “Influence: the Psychology of Persuasion”. This book broke ground by explaining that the magic of persuasion was really more “science” than magic. His premise was that by understanding six persuasion principles, any of us can LEARN to persuade others to do what we wish them to do…link to us, buy from us, etc. At every step of our search marketing strategy, our goal is to get someone to do something. So I thought it would be interesting to take each of these six “weapons of influence”, as he refers to them, and apply them to search marketing.

For a while now, I’ve been noticing a referrer in my logs from a search on Ask.com for [Search better now], which has been sending visitors to an old post of mine. It’s been nothing more than a passing curiosity for me, until today. Today, I came across an Ask ad. See below.
Why I dont like podcasts

Podcasts seem like such a great idea, but they just don’t work for me. Why? Because while I’m listening to them, I find that I’m not really listening. My mind wanders off to other things, or I’ll start reading a blog post from somewhere, or I’ll start typing a blog post…like this one, for example. Yes, right now, I’m “listening” to a podcast, but obviously as I type this, I’m not really listening.

A graphic ad that pops up a sweet little text ad when you mouseover it. Sweet! Now that’s a one-two punch that advertisers ought to love.
