Are you my social network friend or just a social spammer?

I admit that I’m not one of the big social network gurus with a ton of “friends” on places like Facebook. But I’m savvy enough (I think) to understand the difference between a real connection and a fake one. If you and I are complete strangers, and you are going to waste your time and mine in attempt to befriend me via some social network, at least have the brain cells to fake some sort of connection between us.

I promised way back in Part One that as an SEO or a webmaster looking to market your website, you don’t need to create the next big Web 2.0 phenomenon. That’s true, but you may want to consider creating your own social network. While this might not be feasible or even useful for everyone, it is something that you should think about. Would your own social network be of benefit to you? Businesses jumped on the blogging bandwagon when they realized that it could help them communicate with their users. Websites added forums to their sites to increase visits, and foster a sense of community. Perhaps your site could benefit from its own social network. If you think it might, here are a few places that could help you get your network up and running without having to reinvent the wheel (and without having to hire a team of designers and programmers).

Social Commerce – New Revenue Models
Even as social networking evolves, a subset is already being spawned called Social Commerce. These sites are really not technically different from Social Networking sites, except that they revolve around Commerce in some fashion. The essence of a social commerce site is a place where people gather to get product and service advice from trusted peers, to aid in a purchasing decision – or more simply put, product/service recommendation services. The site most often referred to when talking about social commerce is Yahoo’s Shoposphere.

Becoming a part of the community
Remember high school? If not, look through your old yearbook. That yearbook was the paper version of a Social Network. Your friends signed it at the end of the year. All of the major school events and clubs were included. And of course, there were the Most Likely To Succeed type sections. Now take a closer look. Does your picture show up in that yearbook numerous times? Were you voted to be the Most Likely To (fill in the blank)? If you were shy, your picture may not be splattered throughout the yearbook. A school yearbook can be a glimpse into student popularity.

Forget about your feelings towards the Web 2.0 hype. Don’t like the term? Who cares? Think it’s just an overblown buzzword designed to make those hyping it some bucks? Remember when “blogging” was new and you had the same feelings about it?
